Zeigler Miners Get Layoff Notices (250 jobs)

COULTERVILLE -- Ray Weisel said he wasn't surprised when he received notice he likely will lose his job in early September.

Weisel, who lives near Pinckneyville, has worked at Zeigler 11 Mine near Coulterville for nearly 30 years. Weisel said he and his co-workers have spent two years with the threat of a layoff hanging over them.

On Wednesday, Horizon Natural Resources, which owns Zeigler 11, said 250 miners have been given a 60-day layoff notice, effective Sept. 4.

"No, I'm not surprised at all," Weisel said. "In fact, I thought it might have happened sooner than this. This wasn't something that was unexpected."

Rick Fisher of Pinckneyville has worked at Zeigler 11 for 28 years. He also said the announcement wasn't a shock.
