Putin adviser says Russian banks in crisis
Putin adviser says Russian banks in crisis

Largest private bank acts to stop run on deposits

MOSCOW - Russia’s largest private bank acted to stop a run on deposits on Thursday as President Vladimir Putin’s economic adviser said the country’s banking industry was in crisis and blamed the government.

Alfa-Bank imposed a 10 percent commission on depositors who want to withdraw cash early as authorities fought to prevent a run on banks and bring calm to the sector.

Presidential economic adviser Andrei Illarionov made clear he disagreed with Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov who tried earlier in the day to calm fears that banks were in trouble.

“It is obvious that there is a banking crisis,” Interfax news agency quoted Illarionov as saying.

MosNews

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to U.S. President George W. Bush on the occasion of the latter’s 58th birthday, the Russian president’s press service said on Tuesday.

The message reads in part:

“I highly appreciate that not only good working but also humane and warm relations have established between us. This helps efficiently solve any problems on the basis of principles of mutual trust, openness and predictability. During our recent meeting on Sea Island we approved specific steps aimed at further expansion of Russo-American partner-like interaction in various spheres. I am sure that through joint efforts we will manage to successfully realize the goals set.”

3. You people are missing the point here
The russian state is right now paving the way to get back the
ownership of the assets Yeltsin sold away to his cronies and
foreign corporations.
It started with Yukos now their moving into the banking sector.
Putin is not looking for someone to bail out the oligarchs he
is going after their spoils.

4. Thanks for post
I've been trying to follow the Yukos story - but must admit it's hard for me to understand. I do know there is a very significant impact brewing - and it will not be just for Russia but worldwide.

8. Sounds like Comrade Putin has learned the Bushevik Playbook well
Comrade Putin is on board.

Comrade Putin is a Free-Market KGB Man, like his Bushevik Soulmates.

Comrade Putin says "the situation is chaotic and everything is excellent".
