Soldier ("Thumbs Up Lynndie") in prisoner abuse case faces more charges
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2004-07-09-english_x.htm

RALEIGH, N.C (AP) — An Army private accused of abusing Iraqis at Abu Ghraib prison faces more charges of committing indecent acts, but none of the new charges involves Iraqi citizens or detainees, the Army said Friday.

Pfc. Lynndie England, a West Virginia soldier now assigned to Fort Bragg, previously faced three counts of assaulting detainees and 10 other charges.

She was charged late Thursday with one count of violating a general order and four counts of indecent acts, said Fort Bragg spokesman Maj. Richard Patterson. He said specifics of the charges would be revealed next week when an investigatory Article 32 hearing is held at the post.

"None of these five charges involved Iraqi detainees or Iraqi nationals," Patterson said.

If convicted on the original charges, England faced a dishonorable discharge and up to 15 1/2 years in prison. Army officials didn't know how much the additional charges would add to a sentence.

1. this should be interesting...

The pilot who kills a bunch of Canadians (our allies) gets off light. I will be very fascinated to see how PFC Lynndie's sentencing also reflects current military values.

7. The pilot was an officer
England is junior enlisted and will be crucified. Granted, she's guilty, but the injustice in the military just reeks.

9. Not a very fair comparison IMO
A Pilot engaged in Combat firing at a supposed enemy from several thousand feet should not be compared to someone who tortures helpless people. Sometimes in the heat of battle mistakes get made. Friendly fire is a major problem but should not be considered criminal unless total negligence is involved. Sometimes bad decisions get made in the heat of battle. People get frantic or single minded and fail to make certain connections. Torture of Prisoners is a horse of an entirely different color.

2. Probably regarding her affair with her fellow soldier
"Four counts of indecent acts". Sounds like the major felony that Adultery is under the UCMJ.

They're going to hang her out to dry while the rest of the wharf rats walk free.
