Republican Bias at Fox News Documented in New Film
Featuring Former Employees

Former Fox Journalists, Internal Memos to Blow the Whistle on Fox Partisan Bias

Progressives Call for Media Reform
NEW YORK, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- At a New York press conference this coming Monday, four former Fox News employees will go on the record to expose Fox's persistent Republican partisan bias, while releasing internal memorandums from Fox News Channel showing executive level instructions to Fox on how to bias the news.

The four Fox whistleblowers appear, along with three others, in Robert Greenwald's new documentary "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism," excerpts of which will be shown at the news conference. The film is a devastating indictment of the Fox News Channel's purposeful disinformation in the pursuit of partisan objectives. Also at the news conference, Common Cause and MoveOn will outline their forthcoming campaign OUTFOX, starting with thousands of house parties to show the film taking place on Sunday, July 18th.

This is a press release….unsure if it can be classified as LBN….at any rate, I think 2004 should go down as the year for the documentary

24. I Just Ordered My DVD a few Hours Ago!!
Their website (listed above) has a way to order VHS or DVD. Both cost about $10 plus shipping and handling (total less than $14). I think it's a bargain - I can watch it and then pass it around to fellow Dems!

Can't wait till it gets here!

6. I've been waiting and expecting something like this for a long time.
At last someone is going to spill the beans about the FOX lie factory. The greatest thing about all this is the more FOX fights back the more attention it will bring to it. Take that O'Reilly and Hanity, Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!

Subject: FLORIDA COURT RULING SAYS MEDIA CAN LEGALLY LIE

** FLORIDA COURT RULING SAYS MEDIA CAN LEGALLY LIE **

On February 14, a Florida Appeals Court ruled that there is absolutely nothing illegal in a major media organisation lying, concealing or distorting information. The court reversed the US$425,000 jury verdict of 2000 that was in favour of journalist Jane Akre, who charged she was pressured by Fox Television management and lawyers to air what she knew and documented to be false information.

On August 18, 2000, a six?person jury was unanimous in its conclusion that Akre was indeed fired for threatening to report the station's pressure to broadcast what jurors decided was "a false, distorted or slanted" story about the widespread use of Monsanto's rBGH, a genetically engineered growth hormone given to dairy cows. The court did not dispute the heart of Akre's claim, that Fox pressured her to broadcast a false story to protect the broadcaster from having to defend the truth in court as well as suffer the ire of irate advertisers.

Fox argued from the first, and failed on three separate occasions, in front of three different judges, to have the case tossed out on the grounds there there is no hard, fast and written rule against deliberate distortion of the news. The attorneys for Fox, owned by media baron Rupert Murdoch, argued that the First Amendment gives broadcasters the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on the public airwaves.

The Court of Appeals, in its six?page written decision, held that the Federal Communications Commission's position against news distortion is only a "policy", not a promulgated law, rule or regulation.

Fox aired a report after the ruling was handed down, saying that it was "totally vindicated" by the verdict.

14. Speaking of lawsuits...
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 01:52 PM by ignatiusr
I've always wondered, could Fox News theoretically be sued for false advertising? Their ad slogan is "Fair and Balanced," which is designed to attract and maintiain viewership, which they profit from via commercial ad rates. And there's a whole host of tangible evidence (including memos, etc. as mentioned in the documentary) that suggests that their reporting is deliberately and knowingly designed to be partisan, and anything but "fair and balanced." It would be a longshot, obviously, but would it be theoretically possible to file such a suit? Or has anyone already attempted something similar to what I'm talking about?

16. Nike was involved in a lawsuit
regarding truth in advertising

here's some background:

http://www.reclaimdemocracy.org/nike/nike_settles_lawsuit.html

Kasky v. Nike, a lawsuit that began with a false advertising claim and went on to become a U.S. Supreme Court case that explored a corporation's claim to a constitutional right to lie, has concluded.

On September 12, Marc Kasky and Nike Inc. announced a settlement stipulating that Nike will pay $1.5 million (about half of one day's advertising budget) to the Washington, D.C.-based Fair Labor Association (FLA) for "program operations and worker development programs focused on education and economic opportunity." Nike and other corporations accused of "sweatshop" practives hold several seats on the board of directors and wield effective veto power over any organizational activity.

Neither party would confirm that Nike paid Kasky's legal team for their five years of work on the case, but a settlement that did not compensate them is unlikely, given Nike's loss at the U.S. Supreme Court in June. While the Court did not issue a substantive ruling on Nike's constitutional claims, it rejected Nike's pre-emptive appeal and remanded the case to a trial court on the merits of Kasky's complaint--that Nike lied to the public about its "sweatshop" practices in the course of a major PR campaign.

20. Just ordered it!
I can't wait to see it. Plan to show the DVD to friends and family.

Recently, I have been able to convert a number of my friends who have always voted Republican. A cousin of mine who has always voted Repub (she's 53) has actually become a vocal critic of Bush. The state of the economy in SC was the final straw for her. She is going around with voter registration forms, talking to friends who have never voted or have voted Republican in the past.

My, how things have changed around here since 2000!

26. I just saw 'The Corporation" last night
two of Fox's whistleblowers are featured prominently in a segment that specifically focuses on Fox's refusal to air a story about the harm of bgh, but obviously deals with the corporate, corrupt, for-sale nature of Fox "journalism"

Everyone should totally go see "The Corporation" btw, if it's playing near you. It's done by the same people who did "Manufacturing Consent" and it is an amazing documentary.

28. I hope Geraldo, Greta, and a few others have ruined their careers by
joining FOX. No matter what FOX and Murdoch do to fight back, once the expose is out their credibility will be shot. I don't really care if all the media takes a hit. We still have Conason, Helen, and Moore...a few out there to get at the truth...Palast, Pitt, Michael..etc. Let the blood-letting begin. We couldn't undo the power of the media but the FOX-fight that is about to happen will do it for us. Long live Moyers and PBS!!!!
