NAACP Head Asks Bush to Rethink Convention Snub
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The head of the largest and oldest U.S. civil rights group criticized President Bush on Saturday for once again refusing to speak at its convention this year and urged him to reconsider.

Kweisi Mfume, president of the NAACP, said it was ``unbelievable'' that Bush had declined an invitation to speak at the organization's annual meeting for the fourth consecutive year.

``When you are president, you are elected to be president of all the people,'' Mfume said at a news conference as the convention opened. ``You won't do that if you refuse to talk.''

He asked Bush to change his mind and promised that the Republican president would be treated with respect at the Philadelphia event this week even if many delegates oppose his politics.

1. You shouldn't have to beg.....
Which tells you exactly how Bush feels about showing up at your convention.

2. WHY in God's green earth...
are they giving him a second (and third and fourth and fifth) chance? Haven't they heard how he feels about "brown skinned" people???

He is a crass, ignorant racist, something the NAACP should not even want to associate with.

4. The only good reason I can think of
is that they want to keep Bush's refusal in the news a bit longer so it hurts him a bit more. The longer it is in the news, the more people that will hear of it and become disgusted.

The NAACP wants the world to know that this man would not speak at their convention but can get off the bus to shake hands with five people in a diner.

He sure knows how to come together with people who look like him and are lead like sheep to him.

I'm also sure that those headines will be the banner on all of the major African American newspapers in the country.

We will never forget Florida and the 2000 selection of this bigot!

13. My thoughts as well - and good to taunt bu$h*
BTW, why can't the bu$hie cartel just tell the truth besides "flip-flopping the reason":

"White House spokesman Scott McClellan said yesterday that "we had other scheduling commitments at the time" of the convention.

The president, though, has other reasons for dismissing the NAACP. Sources said yesterday that Mr. Bush reportedly was "personally hurt" by an ad run by a group loosely connected to the NAACP during the 2000 presidential contest, portraying him as unsympathetic to James Byrd, the black Texan who was dragged to his death by three white men."

===

I imagine Mr. Byrd's daughter was "personally hurt" when she visited bu$h in his Texas governor's office and he would not even hand her a tissue. Talk about "unsympathetic."

5. Bush does not flip-flop. Once he makes a decision-no matter how horrible
it is or no matter what the consequences to others - he sticks with it.

* Bush is for free trade; then he's for tariffs on steel; then he's against them again.
* Bush is against the U.S. taking a role in the Israeli Palestinian conflict; then he pushes for a "road map" and a Palestinian State.

10. Why would Bush speak at the NAACP convention?
What's in it for him?

He can speak at a conservative A-A organization's meeting instead.
