MSNBC....election postponement?
If this is a repeat post, so sorry. MSNBC just flashed about possible postponement of the election if there is a terrorist attack during the election period (?). Can't believe this might come true? Won't the people take to the streets over this? Will I be the only one out there? Damn.

1. It's been talked about for a while.
That would send a great message to terrorists, wouldn't it? "Look, you can control our elections!"

3. Yes, but
I thought it was a joke, just a scenario that we at DU were "jaw-boning" about, didn't know it was an acutal consideration by BushCo.

26. NY Primary Election Postponed
Albany, N.Y. (AP) ---- Primary elections throughout New York State were postponed yesterday following the suspected terrorist attack which destroyed the World Trade Center towers.

No new date was set for the elections by Governor Pataki, who signed an executive order at midday yesterday putting off the balloting.

Among the primaries suspended were those for the Democratic and Republican nominations for Mayor in New York City. Another major primary was in Nassau County, on Long Island, where Democratic candidates were vying for their party's nomination for county executive.

Lee Daghlian, a spokesman for the state’s Board of Elections, said his agency was notified about the signing of the executive order just after noon. Within about 30 minutes, the board had notified local boards that the primary was off, for now.

To finish looting the US Treasury.

If they get away with it, I expect another Civil War to break out in four to eight years.

ShrubCo Is Trying To Retain Power By Any Means<<

Well.... if they are dissing the Diebold machines... and if they are demanding paper trails... and if the purge list issue is being taken care of in Florida... and if the polls are even close to accurate... they they will have to steal this one by other means. They cannot afford to lose. Cheney's task force papers would be on the front pages... junior and senior would have their papers unsealed.... it could get fugly. They MUST take it by any means necessary. Peace and a legitimate election are the last two things these guys need right now if they are to survive.

7. There is absolutely no reason to postpone the elections
If they didn't during the Civil War, WWII therer is not justification for doing it now. The Democrats and others better speak up about this if in fact it becomes a serious idea.

8. I went to work on 9/11
I could certainly go to vote if we had another terrorist attack.

Here's my take. If Bush is ahead in the polls going into election day there will be no postponement of the election. If Kerry is ahead, then all bets are off as to what will happen.

>I went to work on 9/11
>I could certainly go to vote if we had another terrorist attack.

This would be correct for just about everyone except... people living in NYC - in particular those who live or work in lower Manhattan. So in a 9/11 scenario on election day, what do you do for those people?

25. Trying to make the election process 100% fair is a recipe for disaster....
There will always be people somewhere in this big country disenfranchised through no fault of their own by some man-made problem or act of God. It's unfortunate, and not what we'd want to happen, but to postpone national elections until everyone everywhere can make it to the polls and not feel threatened there is by far the worse choice.

Let's face it, which alternative would you rather have: a country struggling to hold an election in the face of large-scale terrorism, or entrusting George Bush with the power to postpone elections.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

28. Good point
Mario Cuomo on Russert yesterday made a comment about all the talk about there not being a terrorist attack since 9/11 comes across almost like a dare.

Taking that one step farther, the talk of postponing elections due to a terrorist attack is almost like a dare, too. Is BushCo daring the terrorists to attack us on election day? Would he then be able to say he was prepared for this by having in place the groundwork for postponing the election?

So what do we do if a large city in a leaning Blue State is attacked? I can only hope that the terrorists do not take the bait. I have no idea what should happen.

15. Bushco wanted us to keep going to the malls after 9/11
Bushco wanted all of us to keep going to the malls after 9/11. * wanted us to keep the economy going, to continue the comings and goings of our normal daily lives. He wanted us to save the economy and save his hide. He said no "enemy" would derail the United States from its normal, daily running track. WHY WOULD IT BE DIFFERENT NOW?
WHY WOULD HE NOT WANT US TO GO TO THE VOTING BOOTHS IN DROVES THIS TIME AROUND? WHY WOULD HE WANT TO STOP THE MARCH OF OUR DEMOCRACY AND THE VOICES OF OUR CITIZENS? WHY SHOULD WE BE ASKED TO STAY IN CAVES THIS TIME AROUND? WHY????? IF NOT TO SOLIDIFY BUSHCO's power grab and confirmed dictatorship. POWER TO THE PEOPLE. OUT TO THE VOTING PRECINCTS AND VOTING BOOTHS whether Bush is ready or not.
DERAIL BUSH FROM TAKING OVER. KEEP DEMOCRACY GOING FORWARD. THIS NOVEMBER, ATTACK OR NOT, GO OUT AND VOTE! VOTE INTO THIN AIR IF YOU HAVE TO. VOTE WITH YOUR VOICES IN FRONT OF THE TELEVISION CAMERAS. LET'S LIFT UP OUR VOICES WHETHER BUSH WANTS TO HEAR THEM OR NOT, WHETHER POPPY LIKES IT OR NOT, WHETHER JEBBIE GIVES US THE FINGER OR NOT...LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD WHETHER BUSH WANTS TO RECORD IT OR NOT!:grr:

31. 9/11/01 was also primary election day in NYC....
...and the election was postponed within an hour or two after the attack. (Polls had opened early in the morning.) Votes cast before the polls were closed weren't counted, and the election was rescheduled for about 2-3 weeks later.

Now, remember, there was absolutely no planning for the possibility of a rescheduled election, but it all worked reasonably well. Granted, this was just a primary election for mayor and other city offices, but still city officials improvised pretty well. And, IIRC, we also had to have a runoff in the Democratic mayoral nomination race after the primary but before the general election.

The only glitch came later on--I think after the general election--when Giuliani floated a trial balloon about postponing the inauguration of the new mayor. Even Giuliani's fans were shocked by the idea, and it went over like a lead balloon. Mayor Bloomberg was inaugurated right on time at midnight on January 1, 2002, and there were few problems, if any, in the transition.

What is scary about these new plans is not the fact that they're making them...it's the fact that they're making them public. It's like they're trying to prepare us for a postponed election. Frankly, it reeks of a hamhanded attempt to destroy American democracy for good if they don't get the election results they want.
