Michael Moore's controversial film Fahrenheit 9/11 has broken box office records in the UK.

The movie has taken £1.3 million since its release on Friday - the biggest opening weekend for a documentary.

It now looks set to become the UK's highest grossing documentary.

The record is currently held by mountaineering film Touching the Void, which took £2.58 million.

In the United States, Fahrenheit 9/11 became the first documentary to top the box office and has taken 80 million dollars (£45m) so far.

Here, it opened on 132 screens and has been greeted by standing ovations from cinema-goers.
