69. That must be a very strange keyboard...
Virtually every one I'm familiar with only reads whether the "l" key is up or down, then the O.S. combines that with whether or not the shift key is down to decide the case of the incoming character. In which case, the only way you could get an inadvertant capital-L would be if the shift key were stuck, which would of course mean that EVERY OTHER KEY WOULD BE CAPITALIZED AS WELL.

For the record, which brand keyboard are you using?

19. not true
i've answered it pLenty of times - if i didn't answer a query, it's because i didn't see it, or obviousLy i don't Like you. (j/k)

aLthough sometimes i don't answer out of annoyance: the fact that peopLe aren't even responding to my posts but asking about the 'L's.

the 'L' thing: it's more or Less just a marker; if you see this styLe of writing eLsewhere onLine, it's usuaLLy me (aLthough i've had my share of staLkers). many moons ago (maybe 2 years ago, give or take) i was pissed when a few things i had written (short satire) were being passed off with out crediting me. i can't stop that, but i can make my text extremeLy distinguishabLe; and if they want to change the text for proper speLLing/capitaLization, it'LL take some work to do so (not much, but enough to be an annoyance).
that's what started it, and now it's just a force of habit.

the reason i chose 'L' - before i was aware that there were LiberaL sites i couLd join, i mostLy hung out on sports, music, porn, gambLing, etc websites - and i seemed to be the onLy american LiberaL drowning in a sea of freepers. the 'L' was my shout out to the other LiberaLs who were just too timid/ambivaLent/whatever to fight back.

i think i covered it aLL.

5. Maybe they'll fake a sabotage of Air Force One to really scare
the pants off us.

bush could come right out and tell us to keep flying to Disneyland, keep spending money but just to be safe we're going to delay the November elections.

On second thought, this would be even more reprehensible than usual for them since it would impact the entire airline industry.

Honestly, my sanity is being sorely strained by these thugs.

Even if they don't admit them publicly, they HAVE to know what a bunch of cheneyups they have been. If these idiots were willing to give you a $3 billion no bid contract in exchange for a faked attempt on your life, would you risk it? How are you going to collect if they hold true to record? I can't imagine them faking an attempt on their own lives, but wouldn't doubt for a second that they would be willing to screw with someone else's flight.

Nothing "tragic" in my life, but a lot of the "populars" made my life torture, but the initial cause was me, so I do shoulder the initial responsibility.

11. shame that I look on everything connected to Bush as a lie
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 12:09 PM by Marianne
I still think, somewhere along the line, a faked assassination attack on Bush will be staged--all as part of the propaganda to manipulate the people with stealth and lies.

I read Anthony Summers Arrogance of Powera couple of years ago, After reading it,I thought Nixon pure, unmitigated evil. I now think-he was a mere baby compared to George Walker Bush and Dick Cheney. I do hope we get another well written book about this regime similar to that one after this pair is kicked out of the White House, that would expose, without mercy, every evil thing Bush ever did from day one after he was appointed our President by his friends . This not conservative Republicanism; this evil cannot even be attributed to that political view. It is sheer and utter constant evil oozing from their minds and mouths.

this is weird. And it's indicative of the place we find ourselves, that my mind immediately begins trying to figure out if these people are up to something.

ON EDIT: I stand corrected by a family member who thinks he recalls AF1 having to remain in Little Rock a few days for repair, while President Clinton returned to DC on another plane. Still, he thought at least two recent incidents was unusual.

48. Naw. I think we just never heard of them before.
My son is a maintenence tech for one of the major carriers. Most problems are fairly insignificant, like a backup warning light not working. It is still SOP to ground the plane until everything is operational.

Remember, we are talking about a piece of equipment here. Problems occur, and are fixed.

There are several aircraft that are painted to function as AF1. The most expedient was to get the flight underway is to use an alternate one.

I really don't know why we've never heard of these things with AF1 in the past. I suspect some reporter got an inside contact, OR one of the networks finally got ticked off enough that it's no holds barred with the shrub!

34. Bush Air Force One Plane Problem Forces Switch
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (Reuters) - President Bush was forced to switch planes on Monday when a mechanical problem was found on his regular Air Force One 747 jet.

A White House official said the undefined mechanical issue was noticed while the plane was on the ground at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base in Knoxville after carrying the president and his entourage to eastern Tennessee.

36. I think the Plane itself just doesn't like him.
It has been transporting United States Presidents all it's life, so it recognizes leadership when it sees it. Having been forced, for the last four years, to cart around this jackass pretending to be President must rankle it a bit.

I'm actually waiting for the report of Secret Service agents busting into the Presidential Bedroom, to see the Ghost of Abraham Lincoln strangling Dubya in his sleep.

I don't think it AF1 that got mechanical problem, more likely it's W.

74. That has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on DU ...
</p><blockquote><b>"It has been transporting United States Presidents all it's life, so it recognizes leadership when it sees it.<b> Having been forced, for the last four years, to cart around this jackass pretending to be President must rankle it a bit."</blockquote><p>

Are you now attributing reason to an inanimate object (Air Force One)?

In fact, this whole thread is really rather silly, don't you think? Commercial aircraft have maintenance issues from the time they first roll out at Boeing or Airbus until the day they are "retired" from flying. In the past, they (the press) may not have considered this a story, and now they do. The president has access to 2 Boeing 747-400 aircraft. When one needs maintenance, the other becomes "Air Force One". In the past, they (the press) may not have considered this a story, and now they do.

Just because you can't stand Bush doesn't mean the airplane hates him, too. Asserting such claptrap makes for an irrational argument, and it's tripe like this that leads so many people to think DU isn't a forum for serious political discussion!

with/around bush, or do you suppose it's a way for him to set up unscheduled meetings and evade the press knowing what is on his agenda on those days that he is flying around?

i'm guessing he's using these delays/problems as a subterfuge for clandestine meetings with his real handlers. the people who have been pulling the strings all along... the guys who punched him out when he displeased them (the pretzel incident, and perhaps the "boil" or whatever it was under the bandaid). everything about the bush cartel points to organized crime thuggery. the boldness especially... it's just enough to give me a stomachache every time some new piece of crap thing comes to light, like this plan to "delay" (read "cancel") the election using one of bushco's own to make the decision.

think about this. why has bush spent literally 40% of his time at the ranch? because he doesn't have to account for whomever he is meeting out there. they zoom up in rented limos, past guards who keep no records of who is going in or out, and nothing is recorded and there are no witnesses that aren't part of bush's closest inner circle or family.

why would he need to have meetings like this 40% of the time while in office, away from any recordkeeping? what is he hiding? who is he meeting? who does he talk with on the phone, with no record of any calls being officially kept because he's on private property?

54. Maybe the neocons have decided that their best strategy for victory
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 03:13 PM by Zorra
in the November election is martyrdom.

To neocons, everyone and everything is expendable, and they have directly stated that loss of human life and public financial well-being are not a consideration to them regarding their agenda of achieving world domination.

58. Isn't this the NEW AF1?
Maybe they should have retained the old one -- this new one appears to be a lemon! Or perhaps the plane is just balking at the load it's being forced to carry.

62. I have figured it out! the reason he keeps having plane troubles is.....
because when the news breakss about the indictments related to the valerie plame outing, they are hoping people will misread "bush plame troubles" as "bush plane troubles" and just pass it off as no big deal as he has been having plane troubles for quite sometime.

you see they are looking into the "plame inivestigation" to find out why the president keeps having "plame" troubles. i sure hope they get to the bottom of it so they can get the president's plame running again!

har har. :silly:

63. Air Force One is protected by FAA TFR, but Dem planes aren't
When the President's plane lands there is a 30 nautical mile Temporary Flight Restriction for other aircraft but not for Kerry or Edwards. That may be changed but as of now only Air Force One is protected by a TFR.

68. New article posted in GD2004: problems on 2 planes, both left wings!
Yahoo article posted by zulchzulu:

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - A left-wing conspiracy? On Monday, a flap on the wing of Air Force One left its track, forcing President Bush (news - web sites) to return from Oak Ridge, Tenn., in a smaller presidential plane, a Boeing 757 rather than the 747 he arrived in.

Just over a week earlier, on the Fourth of July, a problem with an engine starter valve on the wing of his plane — this time a 757 — delayed Bush's departure from Hagerstown, Md. Another plane from the presidential fleet was flown in from Andrews Air Force Base to take him on to West Virginia.

Two different planes. Two different wings. Both times they were left wings.

72. Bush may not be the nominee this year...
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 09:01 AM by CreekDog
He's up to his shoulders in scandals and problems.

This is why McCain is playing good soldier. If it all falls apart, and there would be so much bloodletting, he is waiting in the wings to offer the Republicans a victory, perhaps with McCain/Powell. McCain didn't suddenly warm his heart to George Bush in a matter of months, he is playing this oh so smart.

But the Republicans just might prefer to lose than have the ideological (and ethical) shift that would happen with President McCain. However, the moderate Republicans, all 37 of them, would cheer.

It's the Democratic nightmare maker, that's true.

I don't know about my track record though. I thought Bush should pick Quayle in '88 and that Ron Reagan Jr. should speak at the Dem convention after his performance at the funeral (but I was in a lot of good company on that).

Now for the novel.
