Oregon: Kerry 50% Bush 42%
Rasmussen poll:

July 12, 2004--In Oregon, the latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows Senator Kerry with 50% of the vote and President Bush with 42%. Four years ago, Bush lost Oregon's 7 Electoral College votes to Al Gore by less than one percent of all votes cast.

These results represent a marked improvement for the Senator compared to the prior month. In that earlier survey, Bush was up by a single point, 46% to 45%. As a result, Oregon moves from the "Toss-up" category to "Leans Kerry" for our Electoral College projections.

Among Oregon Conservatives, Bush leads 75% - 18%. Moderates prefer Kerry 60% - 30% and Liberals favor the Senator 83% to 9%.

1. Very good. We are very pissed off here
And among our conservatives in this state is a strong libertarian contingent that cannot stand Bush's decimation of the Constitution or Ashcroft's meddling in our state's assisted suicide law.

3. Wow, and despite the Oregonian's relentless cheerleading
Sandy Rowe's evil masters aren't going to like these poll results one little bit. Look for the Big O's editorial page to get shriller and whinier, and David Reinhard's clueless columns to get loonier if this trend keeps up.

I, however, will continue to bust ass for the Kerry campaign, and I'm not taking one vote anywhere for granted.

8. That's for sure
The Oregonian loves Bush.

They covered up for Neil Goldschmidt, for Bob Packwood JUST BEFORE the 1994 election, and they're covering up for Bush now.

4. the wild card is the anti-gay marriage initiative
How will this hot button item affect voter turnout? The fact that the supporters of this piece of shit were able to turn in record numbers of signatures in a short time doesn't bode well. But it may equally galvanize those of us on the left to turn out again (as we have numerous times in the past to defeat Lon Mabon's hate-initiatives). If the initiative does go down, maybe Gordon Smith will follow in a couple of years when he is up again.

9. I think it will drive up voter turnout
More people will vote, and that generally favors the Democrats here.

7. The polls have been quiet since Fahrenheit.
Interesting results, but hasn't there been a notable absence of polls in the past few weeks. I wonder why?

Not to worry. I went to see Kerry list night and he has found his voice and hit his stride. And Theresa is the best secret weapon anyone could have. :dem:

That I rarely if ever see a Bush/Dick sticker on cars but see plenty of Kerry stickers. The Faux patriotism has faded here.

14. Oregonians tend to dislike being told what to think and what to do
Just my impression from having lived here about 14 years. In fact, the Oregon spirit is one major reason I moved here.

Nice to know it's alive and well, waking up and getting ready to kick bush's a** back to Crawford where it belongs. (Well, * belongs somewhere other than Crawford, but there ain't no place that low on earth.)

17. How 'bout a federal penitentiary?
Or The Hague?

He'll be VERY lucky if that's the worst that happens to him - to be kicked merely back to Crawford. He'll be getting off WAY easy if that's all that happens.

16. Oregon is going solid Kerry in 04
I live here and I don't see a chance in hell that Bush can win this state. Our economy has taken major hits in the last 4 years, our education system is in shambles, and our National Guardsmen are taking terrible losses in Iraq...No way Oregon is going to re-elect the chimp. Even people I know here who are sure Bush is going to win the national election are pretty convinced that Oregon will be solidly democratic this time around.

We are not a swing state...we've already swung.

Oregon's gay-marriage foes submit record signatures

I would used to have believed this would backfire, but I no longer have such faith in my fellow citizens. My gut instinct says this will only play to the hardcore and fascist rethug base, but who knows. Division and hatred and fear is ALL they have to offer and it appears to be working. As hard as it will be, if this passes I will need to seriously reconsider my citizenship in this Country. Thoughts?

Oregon's gay-marriage foes submit record signatures

By BRAD CAIN
The Associated Press

DON RYAN / AP

SALEM, Ore. — The battle over gay marriage in Oregon shifted to the ballot yesterday, when opponents of same-sex marriages triumphantly turned in the highest number of signatures ever submitted for an initiative measure in the state's history.
The 244,587 signatures amassed by the Defense of Marriage Coalition — more than twice the necessary amount — are the latest salvo in the state's ongoing fight over the contentious social issue.

In March, commissioners in Multnomah County, Oregon's largest and most liberal enclave, directed county employees to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

More than 3,000 marriage licenses were issued before a judge halted the process to give the state Legislature and the state's highest court a chance to weigh in on the issue.

Then, five weeks ago, backers of an anti-gay-marriage law — similar versions of which already exist in 39 states — launched their drive to place their proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot.
