SAN ANTONIO — An airman working convoy duty with the Army was killed in action July 11 when insurgents attacked the convoy, Pentagon officials announced today. Staff Sgt. Dustin W. Peters, 25, of El Dorado, Kan., is the first airman to die in the convoy support operations, begun earlier this year.
Peters deployed to Iraq from Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., in February. He was assigned to the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing and attached to the Army’s 494th Truck Company at Balad Air Base, Iraq.

The Air Force has been providing transportation specialists to assist the Army, which is short on truck crews. At Little Rock, he served as the noncommissioned officer in charge of equipment support for the 314th Logistics Readiness Squadron.

“We lost a valuable member of the Little Rock Air Force Base team and our Air Force family,” said Col. Joseph Reheiser, commander of Little Rock’s 314th Airlift Wing, in a prepared release. “Sergeant Peters will be missed, but his dedication and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

3. U.S. Air Force sees rare combat death in Iraq

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (July 13, 1:15 pm ADT) - Military deaths reported by the Pentagon on Tuesday included the first Air Force member to be killed in action in Iraq since March and only the fifth since the invasion a year earlier.
Staff Sgt. Dustin W. Peters, 25, of El Dorado, Kan., was killed July 11 near a U.S. base dubbed Summerall, near the town of Bayji, which is about 155 miles north of the Iraqi capital. A brief Pentagon announcement gave no other details except to say he was killed by "enemy action."

Peters was assigned to the 314th Logistics Readiness Squadron, based at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark.

The Air Force has had nine deaths in Iraq - four in combat and five from non-combat causes. That is fewer than any of the other services. As of Monday, the Army had 662, the Marines had 185, and Navy had 19 and the Coast Guard had one. Two Pentagon civilians also have been killed.

Spc. Jeremiah W. Schmunk, 21, of Richland, Wash., was killed July 8 in Baghdad when his vehicle came under attack; he was a member of the Washington National Guard. Also, Spc. Shawn M. Davies, 22, of Aliquippa, Pa., died July 8 in Baghdad of an unspecified non-combat related illness. He was a member of the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

The four Marines, all assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division, were killed in a non-combat related vehicle accident July 10 in an unspecified location in western Iraq. There are:

- Cpl. Terry Holmes, 22, of Hollywood, Fla.

- Sgt. Krisna Nachampassak, 27, of Burke, Va.

- Pfc. Christopher J. Reed, 20, of Craigmont, Idaho.

- Staff Sgt. Trevor Spink, 36, of Farmington, Mo.

4. 5 combat deaths out of almost 900?
This brings back my ol USMC resentment about inequalities of pay & benefits between warriors & technicians. Obviously, Army vets know what I'm talking about. (no diss-respect intended).

2. Hope this story about yet another death in Iraq actually gets
into the news. It seems the Iraq has gone to the back pages since the big Hand Over.
