CLEVELAND -- A judge sentenced two brothers to more than eight years in federal prison Tuesday for writing more than $300 million in bad checks.

U.S. District Court Judge John M. Manos sentenced Elie Abboud, 50, of Hinckley, and Michel Abboud, 48, of North Randall, to eight years and one month each.

The judge allowed them to remain free on bond pending the appeal of their February 17 convictions on more than 70 counts each involving conspiracy, bank fraud, money laundering and tax violations.

The defense claimed the Arab-American defendants were swept up in the government's fervor to arrest alleged terrorists after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.
