Irish group designated terrorists

WASHINGTON, July 13 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department Tuesday designated an Irish militant group a foreign terrorist organization.

The order, signed by Secretary of State Colin Powell, places the Continuity Irish Republican Army - also know as the Continuity Army Council and Republican Sinn Fein -- on the U.S. list of foreign terrorist outfits.

The State Department now has 38 such groups on that list.

The designation makes it illegal for people in the United States, or those subject to U.S. jurisdiction, to provide material support to such groups. It also requires U.S. financial institutions to block assets and deny U.S. visas to the groups' representatives and members.

2. Payback for Blair's long, expert blowjob
Figures he'd want to screw the Irish as his fee (among other payment he requires, I'm sure)

3. I wonder if the Irish media are on the list too -given Bush's* humiliation

(I guess we can already suppose that DUers and other Lib/Progressives are on the list as well....)

BTW, I've always wanted to start a thread asking DUers' views on the politics of Northern Ireland, but never wanted to risk starting an international flame war. Given ASSSKROFT is undoubtedly assigning search words that might signal Sinn Fein sympathies to his cyber surveillance goonies, I guess now is not the time. Nonetheless I'd be very curious how DUers feel about the whole issue (and how well versed they are on the history). It would be a fascinating discussion with our more liberal progressive Brits, and both Protestant and Catholic Irish-DUers. Perhaps another time....(Perhaps after November?)

7. I've been very curious about that also. When the whole freedom
fighter v. terrorist issue is brought up I always think of Ireland.

Of course, fighting for your land like the Irish doesn't coincide with AQ religious zealots so I certainly don't think of AQ as the same but it definitely makes me more sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinians.

6. American Patriots were terrorists.
The order, signed by Secretary of State Colin Powell, places the Continuity Irish Republican Army - also know as the Continuity Army Council and Republican Sinn Fein -- on the U.S. list of foreign terrorist outfits.<<

Sooooooooooo...... have you seen the movie The Patriot with Mel Gibson? I guess that would put our forefathers in a heap of trouble... and when you think about it.... 20,000,000 native americans couldn't all be wrong.... now could they? I wonder if they considered the right and just cavalry to be "terrorists" too....

Remember in Legend of the Fall..... Anthony Hopkins after reaching a point in his life (stroke and all) where the treatment of the native americans cut to the bone.... said... quite forcefully.... "screw the government".
