First lady happy daughters are campaigning
First lady happy daughters are campaigning

The Associated Press
Last Updated: July 14, 2004, 05:04:00 AM PDT

WASHINGTON (AP) - First lady Laura Bush says she's delighted her daughters are taking part in President Bush's re-election campaign, saying she told them to "stand up straight and keep your hair out of your eyes."

The time had come for Jenna and Barbara Bush to participate, Mrs. Bush said, even though the first couple sometimes has chafed at press attention given to the 22-year-olds.

"I think our children are finding this race very tough when they're watching from the sidelines," she said in an interview broadcast Wednesday on NBC's "Today" show.

snip...
In the "Today" interview, Mrs. Bush also said that she believes Democrats John Kerry and John Edwards continue to harshly criticize Bush on Iraq because they don't have an answer themselves.

1. campaigning is one thing
fundraising (as Jenna is doing now) is a whole other. You get involved in fundraising for someone, and you are fair game. sorry, kiddo, your side made the rules, we just play by them.

for keeping us informed on the 'family values' of the bushies...and reminding us of these public displays of jenna's family values on the streets of Austin Texas, and the local bar...along with the 'other' campaigning family value bushies...

campaigning is ALWAYS a lot of big parties and ALCOHOL...so the bushies will display even more, no doubt...

seem to recall that he was setting up the publication when KILLED BY ANTHRAX...and it's interesting that NOBODY has been allowed into the building since that (almost three years), except NOW, entry to the building only by a company OWNED by NYC adulterer rudy guiliano....

bulging out (as she is already) from beer-drinking binges, sooon, jenna will move on to HARD-CORE alcoholism, age rapidly, bulge out even more, add on the damage from LOTS of drugs...and you get someone like this by age thirty....

12. Then they need to prove themselves.
Let the girls reach out to young voters. Let them meet with people their age & answer questions about their Dad's domestic & foreign policy.

* How can kids without riches & connections get an education?

* Will there be a draft?

* What about a woman's right to choose?

Let them demonstrate grace & intelligence in answering these hard questions. Or they can continue to be window dressing; in which case, I recommend wardrobe consultants.

39. I do not believe in visiting the sins of the father upon the children.
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 04:51 PM by Zorra
I don't care if they drink and party. I don't care if they have sex or who they have it with. I did the same thing when I was 22.

I have yet to hear them utter one political phrase other than, when being asked if she was a republican, one of them said, "uh, I wouldn't say that"

Quite frankly I am horrified at the nasty things that people are saying about these young women. If you want to say mean personal things about Bu$h and the neocons and the rest of the republican shitheads, that is perfectly justifiable, many of them have done horrible criminal things for which they deserve prison time.

But these kids don't deserve it. Yeah, they are rich, maybe spoiled, but I don't want to see them get their heads blown off. I don't want to see anyones heads get blown off. The Bu$h twins are probably less informed and more naive than the kids that are getting their heads blown off in Iraq.

There are converted republicans on this site that voted for Reagan and Bu$h. They are more worthy of your mean-spiritedness than these young women are, for they are partly responsible for the mess we are in now. But I'm not going to hold it against them, they were uninformed, and I'm glad that they are with us now. For all you know the twins might have been voting for Democrats for years.

They did not ask to be born into the Bu$h family, they just were. Think about what an extreme handicap that would be to personal growth. They are just freaking kids for god's sake.

These kids did not bring us into war. Their asshole father did. I hated it when republicans were constantly saying mean things about Chelsea Clinton. She did not deserve it. And the Bu$h twins have not done anything to deserve the personal attacks against them either. Attack them for campaigning for their father, that is somewhat legitimate, but it does not make them fucksticks and crotch whatevers.

If they start coming out as anti-choice or anti-gay or some other crap during the campaign, then let 'em have it for that.

They are probably being forced to campaign for their father, and, because of their upbringing, have lacked the circumstances and experiences that might be necessary to develop into assertive, conscientious, and principled human beings with a sense of egalitarianism.

Teresa Heinz Kerry was a rich girl, and has been a republican most of her life. Will you paint her with the same brush? She certainly doesn't deserve it. And hey, she finally saw the light and became a Democrat.

Tell me, other than party too much, and just now deciding to campaign for their father, what else have these young women done to you or the people of this country?

It is really ugly and unbecoming to be attacking these young women in this way, and I would think beneath the dignity of most DU'ers.

And Jenna is supposed to be attending NYU in the heart of New York City. She won't last a week. The local news said she will attend the university, but must first tend to her highest priority which is "getting her father (re)selected".

What a ho. I hope she ends up at the bottom of the East River.

33. they're adults now, aren't they?
lots of people are supporting themselves by that age, some even have families of their own to take care of. They just graduated from decent schools, should have more job prospects than the average new grad due to their connections - if they want to campaign for the GOP I say that's their choice.

And by now they should have learned that for every action there are consequences. Become a public character, get treated like a public character.

23. On another thread regarding this, I made a comment about "respect"...
McClellan had asked the media to "show respect" toward Jenna and Barbara Bush. This was my response:

Respect

In my opinion, treating them with respect means treating them as equal players. They are adult women who have voluntarily entered the political arena; they are not little girls, no matter how much Scott McClellan would like us all to think of them that way. Why should they be treated any differently just because they are young and female, or because of their family connections? I'll respect them by not assuming they desire or need delicate treatment.

However, after seeing a lot of the comments in this thread, I have to say that this was not exactly what I had in mind. I don't see any reason to "get nasty" -- we can be as hard-hitting as we want without lowering ourselves to the level of the GOP. And some of these comments strike me as more than a little sexist. My concern is not so much for the first daughters as it is for the quality of debate.

31. Reminds me of some kind of a Disneyworld production
selling your overly revealing, cleavaged daughter and not objecting to her appearing in public looking like a veritable slut. The daughters eat it up, believing, that they are like beautiful models one sees on the platforms in fashion shows, which appeals to their adolescent conception of thei ego and their life

Many at their age are starting their families and taking on the responsibility and have already been in the work force for at least two years,.

These two are rich, priviledged, and developmentally backward. They are being used as soft porn for their father, who looks as though he is more turned on by his daughters, than he is with his wife.

Sell your daughters by having them appear in the soft porn Vogue. So far they have looked like sluts in the photos. What on earth are they there for?

Reminds me of the biblical thing where Lot gave his two daughters to the guys who were banging on his door demanding the visiting stranger be handed out to them so they could abuse him--instead Lot offered his two daughters as compensation.

realize the people aren't giving them the money. that they have to hand the money over to someone else.

I swear to goodness, I'm not making this up...heard on TV (must have been CNN) that in the Vogue interview, the one that just graduated from college plans to teach in Harlem (right). The other one plans to work with AIDS victims in Africa. Did I miss somewhere where they had entered the Miss America pageant?

That being said, I agree with the post about some of these posts crossing the line. Remember how outraged you were about some of the Hillary and Chelsea posts? Let's not sink to that level, please. Surely we are the party of intelligent rhetoric?

40. ABC did a story about the twins today

They had the reporter from Vogue on with Charlie-Rethug Gibson.

She was trying to describe the interview and there were so many "anda's and kinda's and ah ah stutters" that I don't know what she really said.

This was the most telling part for me. At the end of the interview Charlie said," I've heard that their grandfather has said that the girls take a long time to answet his emails."

I thought that was very telling. Both of my grandfathers are dead. But it is strange to me that with all the family values they talk about, do they value their grand parents?

For those of you still lucky enough to have grandparents, how long do you take to answer their emails?
