What the hell is Rove up to?

Read this article. Bush is running around touting "conservative values" saying that we have to keep in place his policies (which are UNPOPULAR by the way, most Americans think Iraq is a mistake and don't approve of his giveaway to the rich tax cuts). I am more and more convinced that Bush/Rove feels their base is under real threat. Why is he running to the right? He got 1/4 of the gay vote last election - does anyone believe he will get that now? He got 8% of the African-American vote. Does anyone believe he will get more votes after the NAACP snub?

Now the gay marriage thing has blown up on him. To Christian conservatives he probably looks completely incompetent.

Why do this? His base is already secure isn't it? Why is he not tacking to the middle like Kerry and Edwards are?
