FMA is dead!!! 48-50
C-span says that they voted 48-50 to continue debate. I think it's been filibustered to death.

It was just a cloture vote, it doesn't mean
that there are 48 Senators who actually support that bullshit. There are probably far fewer who do.

I can't do anything with them until Monday, but watch out then. I'm sure I can include my very own "dear" Senators Cornyn and Hutchinson in the 48. I'm so sorry. Our Senate and Reps have nothing more important to debate or to take care of than this stupid issue.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER IS THE MOTTO! Never Forget.

Republicans voting no: Campbell (CO), Chafee (RI), Collins (ME), McCain (AZ), Snowe (ME), Sununu (NH)

Kerry and Edwards were absent.

48. Don't know much about Collins and Snow
except they seem to have more common sense and compassion about social issues. At least in the voting. Chafee from RI is another one. He is so much like a Democrat I wonder why he doesn't switch parties. He is the most Liberal of all the Republicans. A good guy. He has been very critical of the Party. Wonder why he doesn't at least become an Independent like Jeffords.

85. Collins is better than Snowe on gay rights
Collins is a cosponsor of ENDA while Snowe isn't. Also, Snowe voted to ban funds to schools that had banned the Boys Scouts because they are anti-gay. However, Collins voted to keep funds for those schools.

Also, Collins is against the death penalty so it seems like she may be more liberal on social issues while Snowe is more skeptical of tax cuts as seen from her opposition to the 2003 tax cuts while Collins supported them.

. . . this was probably just a republican ruse to get Kerry and Edwards on record before the election so that they could use their vote against them. I'm glad they didn't show up.

On the other hand — I'm a little surprised by Senator Byrd's vote.

66. exactly. and I like Byrd's Vote
wait, wait, take a deep breath and listen.

This was only a cloture vote. I am certain he would vote against the amendment when it matters, but how dumb does the Grand Old Party look every time Rick Santorum takes the floor? keep that going, the American people are getting weary of it.

Same reason, I bet, that moderate Republicans voted to end the debate, they were looking bad being associated with those whackos.

72. Why are you certain he would vote against the amendment?
Byrd rarely supports gay rights at all. His vote wasn't part of some grand plan to embarrass Republicans on the Senate floor. There was no chance of invoking cloture so it would be idiotic for him to try to by himself.

18. This Fellow Unfortunately Named After Anal Ooze Annoys Me
It cannot make an honest whit of difference to any married heterosexual couple how a couple of strangers who are homosexual arange their affairs. Anyone who claims it does is either conciously lying, or afflicted with the real belief a diety will punish the land for its sins, or afflicted with such a poor sense of personal boundaries as to warrant psychiatric institutionalization.

Any honestly titled "defense of mariage" measure would have to be aimed at banning divorce, which not even the most devout fundamentalist could stomach nowadays....

I'm pretty sure that the sentence, "Isn't that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?", was meticulously constructed by evil government scientists and then disseminated via the public media for the express purpose of determining whether or not it is possible for humans to roll their eyes so far back in their heads that they become permanently stuck in that position.

86. Sununu is kind of libertarian
He is a cosponsor of a bill to amend part of the Patriot Act and voted with many Democrats on another civil liberties amendment last year, and he was the only republican to do so. He also opposed the Energy bill partly because it was an attack on the Northeast, but also due to all the pork barrel spending. He also opposed the medicare reform bill because it cost too much. Both of those last votes, he voted with John McCain like he did on FMA. So, it seems like he is kind of libertarian in many of his views on wants states to decided things like marriage. And, New Hampshire is a pretty libertarian state and is kind of liberal on social issues so Sununu may want to be careful about what he does on issues like gay rights.

- Sen. Kit Bond (Mo.)
- Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Colo.) (voted NO)
- Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas)
- Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) (voted NO)

Two Republican senators are single. (not sure why that matters)

65. They Voted AssCroft Out In Favor Of a Dead Man
> Hey Ashcroft was a Senator from Missouri

The late Mel Carnahan defeated Ashcroft shortly after his demise in a rather suspicious airplane crash.

(I'm not sure why we call that being "Wellstoned" and not "Carnahaned")

43. They are next going to try to pass a fed. law rather . . .

than a Constitutional amendment.

This has not gone away. It's just morphed.

diversion from the chaney-up called Iraq.

67. Good Day!
The Federal Marriage Amendment was killed before it even got to a vote. Working in a US Senator's office, we received 20000 calls telling us we are Godless, going to burn in hell, and we are making our beds right next to the "queers", just because our Senator had enough balls to say No to the FMA. Taking that bullshit for the two weeks up to this vote, all I gotta say is...ha...haha...HA. Bitch and scream to us all you want, you are still a bunch of discriminating people who don't deserve the rights that are given to you.

Oh man. Thank you for working so hard, and the senator you work for, too. (You probably can't tell us who s/he is, but that's OK.)

Bless all of you.

88. I called Senator Hollings' Office today....
I was born and raised in Charleston (SC) and had to call Senator Hollings today to THANK HIM for his vote. The woman who answered was so very greatful to have a pleasant and happy person call. It made her day. I told her that my late grandparents knew the Senator well and said that they would be prod of his vote today. I also told her that I married the love of my life two weeks ago. Finally, after 8 1/2 years together, we are legal. Thank you to ALL of the fine senators who voted NO!!!!
By the way, it REALLY does matter when you make these phone calls.

77. Bush may have gotten what he wanted already. If the intent...
...of the proposal for a new amendment was just to run something up the flagpole that had no chance of passing but would show how the Republicans are out there "fighting the good fight" and the Democrats are working against this. I doubt it would alienate his base and might help him with some of the "swinging" states.

81. Of course, they never cared if it really passed
This was pure theater (to paraphrase an uncannily astute Saddam).

Simple dinner show for the rabid fundies, something to gnaw on to distract the animals.

Must make it look like they are addressing the "concerns" of their minions.

As an added bonus, yet another opportunity to remind the hoi polloi that Democrats are The Enemy.

Check!
So what's up next on the RW To-Do list?
Oh yeah, engineer Cheney's graceful, medically necessary exit, while garnering sympathy from the prayerful crowd.

Morons.

92. Here's a fun fact:

Gay Marriage Issue Fails to Excite American Voters
Wed Jul 14, 2004 12:45 PM ET
<snip>
Pollster Andrew Kohut of the Pew Research Center said same sex marriage was not and would not become a top issue in the presidential battle. In one survey he conducted earlier this year, voters ranked it as 24th most important of 25 issues, ahead only of sending a space ship to explore Mars.
