UPI: Sen.(Warner):More Iraq Abuse Allegations(no"footdragging, pressure")
Edited on Thu Jul-15-04 01:21 PM by DeepModem Mom
Did anyone see Warner on CNN? When I walked in, he seemed to be saying that DOD, Rummy were being forthcoming, and doing all they could. They are addressing this issue, but are they trying to address it on their terms, instead of Seymour Hersh's terms?

Senator: more Iraq abuse allegations

Washington, DC, Jul. 15 (UPI) -- There are still more allegations of abuse of detainees in Iraq by the U.S. military, Virginia Republican Sen. John Warner said Thursday.

"We are still uncovering as late as this morning other cases that will be promptly investigated by the Defense Department, allegations relating to variances of the Geneva Convention and indeed rules and regulations" of the military, Warner told reporters.

The Army is investigating at least 90 cases of alleged abuse of detainees and civilians by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among them are at least 37 deaths of detainees, nine of them apparent homicides....

ON EDIT: Here is a link to an earlier thread on the upcoming "closed-door, classified briefing" Senator Warner was reporting on:

ANOTHER EDIT: From an article cited below by maddezmom, on possible "footdragging":

"In answer to questions, Warner said he found no footdragging by the Pentagon in meeting his requests for information and no pressure from the administration or lawmakers who oppose his efforts to look into the abuses."

2. DoD investigations alone are useless
They can handle the individual cases ok, but the envoronment that allowed it to happen, as well as the documentation that leads to higher-ups needs a more independent hand.

3. variances of the Geneva Convention
They make this sound like some kind of God damn zoning ordinance or something. Either they violated international law or they didn't, why don't they say so.

7. I saw warner and it was disgraceful.....
he said he was "very impressed" with the amount and quality that the SECRETARY OF DEFENSE has given the various investigations. WTF is rummy still doing in that job and WHY the fuck is he directing the investigations? I want to fucking SCREAM!!! :grr:

anything "real" on this unless Hersh releases more damning photographs.

I don't want to see anymore photographs but he must do it, or they will footdrag and come out with a report like the "Butler" report that allowed Tony Blair to squirm out of going to war based on false intelligence.
