More prisoner abuses uncovered in Iraq: top US senator
WASHINGTON (AFP) - New cases of alleged abuse of Iraqi prisoners by US soldiers have been uncovered, a top US senator said, three months after US media broadcast photos of detainees being sexually humiliated at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

"We're still uncovering, as late as this morning, other incidents, other cases that will be promptly investigated by the Department of Defense (news - web sites)," Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites) Chairman John Warner said after his panel was briefed by Pentagon (news - web sites) officials in a closed-door meeting.

Warner, a Virginia Republican, said there were possible violations of the Geneva Convention and Defense Department rules and regulations on prisoners.

The Pentagon officials briefing the committee also showed the senators 24 confidential documents from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

1. Look like they realize the child-rape tape will probably come out
They are trying to 'innoculate' the press ahead of time, no doubt.

13. Hersh and the Washington Post
both have at least 1 or 2 CD's full of pictures. Plus at least one more soldier came forward, after the story broke, and gave Hersh another CD full of pictures.

Apparently, there's a lot of copies of pictures and videos that have been spread around.

However, even worse than the abuse, is the possibility that on at least one night after an uprising, US troops killed a number of Iraqi prisoners after they went back to their tents. Mazan Dana was collecting video evidence of this event when he himself was killed in cold blood by US troops. The US claimed the Iraqis were killed in a mortar attack.

8. When Warner says such things
that means they know the dam is about to break. He's always so dependable on holding the line for Team Bush. To see such a tactical retreat as an admission like this is like a flare going up.

Take cover.

9. The lid has been kept tight.
Prison Torture has been kept to "abuse", sexual humiliation", a few bad apples" so far. That's the public perception. The Media did it's job in fostering this perception. The System Wide Policy of Torture has been kept in the jar and the lid has been screwed on tightly. The Right Wing and even the Dems are hesitant to open the jar.

10. Very interesting, isn't it?
It would make a lot more sense to release the material, and get it over with, you'd think.

It would be absolutely wrong to let these events pass soundlessly, and accept them by concealment. I've been wondering continually when they were going to get this over with, and convince the world we will set a new course WITHOUT torture........ unless there's no intention to put these evil practises aside, after all.

Thank God for people like Seymour Hersh. It's an inexplicable mystery that there are people like him in the world in the first place, when he could have just as easily been born a deteriorated asshole advocating sheer torment and unbearable heartache for "enemies" just like our brain-damaged worshippers of getting temporary advantage over others.

12. "Alleged" abuse?
It's WAY too late for THAT!

(I know it's a news reporter's legal trick to say that, but it's far beyond alleged...)

14. If the Repugs really think they are going to keep a lid on this
until after the election, they are more stupid than I thought. I think Sy Hersh is playing it smart and biding his time so that this has the maximum impact and damage towards the Bush admin. I also agree that if this torture and mistreatment of children gets out (especially pictures) are guys over there are going to take it on the chin for it. (wish them all the best). Also our reputation in the eyes of the world will rank below Rwanda, North Korea, and the other assholes of the world.

15. "Possible violations" and "Prompt investigations"
Two lies.

They are definite violations and stonewalled investigations.
