John Edwards Quizzed on Milk, Beer Prices (Pointless Presswhore Article)
WASHINGTON - Democratic vice presidential contender John Edwards (news - web sites) may not know how much milk costs in New Mexico, but he's got a handle on his local grocery prices.

Edwards has promoted himself as the down-to-earth candidate who can relate to the struggles of working families, while trying to portray Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) as out of touch.

Broadcaster Don Imus put those claims to the test Thursday, quizzing the North Carolina Democrat about the costs of a gallon of milk and six-pack of beer in Albuquerque, N.M.

"You were just in Albuquerque, do you know?" Imus asked.

Edwards sidestepped the ale question, saying, "I haven't bought a six-pack of beer in years, so I don't know."

<snip>

"I know about what it costs. I think a half gallon of milk costs about $2.30, $2.40," he said. "Is that right?"

A half gallon of non-name brand whole milk sells for $2.29 at the Safeway grocery store in Edwards' upscale Georgetown neighborhood in Washington. It's $2.09 at Smith's Food & Drug Centers in Albuquerque.

Gee, if Edwards was off by 30 cents, how Gored would he be :eyes:

Same at that store in upscale Georgetown (I've actually shopped at that Safeway, and it's not all that and a bag of chips) as it is in the warehouse grocery filled with immigrants a mile or so away.

Was looking for some beer. Didn't know I couldn't buy it in Georgetown, so we went to some strip club called...um...I don't remember. I remember a place on K street called Archibalds, but I can't remember the place in Georgetown. Jesus, how did I start talking about strip clubs. I'm such a perv.

Came highly recommended, but I thought Archibalds was better. Plus, the sports bar upstairs from Archibalds was quite nice too.

He was a penny off. With that in mind, do you really want him a heart-beat away from the Presidency???(/sarcasm)

6. A six pack of beer is too generic anyway.
Six pack of fancy import to a sixer of Milwaukee's Best, there's a huge spread there anyway.

Milwakee's Best is so cheap. At one time it was cheaper than pop. I am assuming taxes have taken care of that but it must be cheap.

the beast is still mighty cheap, though is rivaled by other cheap ass beers like hamm's and blatz. most of these are cheap for a reason (though i can't for the life of me figure out why budweiser is priced how it is haha). however, the best of the "cheap" beers is pabst blue ribbon, which also happens to be one of my favorites.

Milk is a bit more up here in the northwest, around $2.60 a gallon, a bit more to get the GBH-free stuff.

Here, in NC, I thought a gallon had edged up to about 3.99 or 4.00.

This is what passes for campaign reportage? GOD how pathetic that the man was even asked such a question. He is not auditioning for the Price is Right. As if the ability to recite supermarket prices in Albequerque is a good measure of his ability to formulate POLICIES that affect the lives of individuals.

No wonder some folks drink too much of the stuff.

On edit.

No it's not cheap. I read those prices as per gallon, not per half-gallon. For once, we've got it good on at least one product here in Portland.

Of course, I don't drink the stuff - though my wife does.

1/2 gallon runs usually around $1.79 or so, with a gallon about 80 cents more, though it's fluctuated a bit the past few months, and we pay a bit more to get the GBH-free stuff.

24. Now that makes sense, at least.
I've never understood why it costs twice as much to buy milk a half-gallon at a time. Since only my wife drinks it, we usually buy the halfsies, soo... at least your prices make sense in terms of how much you pay for each amount.

As for butter, yeah, it's crazy how much it costs. I finally got access to enough studies seven or eight years ago to convince my wife that we margarine is far worse for you than butter, but the switch definitely jacked up our grocery budget a bit. At least this news is finally hitting the general public.

20. Imus is not a dumb man but
he sure can ask some dumb questions sometimes. First of all, if Edwards was in NM campaigning, why would he be going into stores buying milk? Wouldn't a campaign worker be doing that? Besides, don't they stay at hotels during the campaign? Why would they need to go buy milk? He could have asked what the average price of milk was. The beer question is even more stupid. It can vary a lot based on type and brand. I wonder how Imus knows how much beer costs in NM? I might have asked him that since he is a recovering alcoholic.
