WP: Pro-GOP Groups Outpaced In Funds
Pro-Democratic '527s' Far Ahead

Over the past four months, Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) has raised more money than the Bush campaign and substantially eroded the president's once-huge cash advantage.

Now, President Bush and his GOP allies have suffered another serious setback: Independent pro-Republican groups that recently vowed to challenge pro-Democratic organizations for supremacy in spending unregulated or "soft" money on campaign ads and voter mobilization are getting their clocks cleaned by their rivals.

One of the most heavily publicized pro-GOP groups, Progress for America, raised $2.3 million in the second quarter of this year, most of it from three of Bush's major fundraisers, according to new filings with the Internal Revenue Service. Another, the Leadership Forum, backed by some of Washington's most prominent Republican lobbyists and the GOP congressional leadership, raised $15,719.

The two top pro-Democratic groups, the Media Fund and America Coming Together, raised nearly nine times as much in the past quarter, or a combined $20 million, according to IRS filings.

14. Notice how the article tries to make it look bad...
" Soros has given more than $11 million to pro-Democratic 527s. AFSCME gave the Media Fund $2 million in April and May."

The article implies 527s are just a front for big donors, but in fact, using their own figures, $68 million was collected, which means the majority of the money is coming from small donations - probably over the INTERNET. Democrats must be careful of this attempt to deceive, democrats must make sure that everyone they talk to knows the majority of the money comes from small individual contributions. This is a grass roots movement, from the working people, from the bottom up as opposed to GOP movements from the top down.

Edited on Thu Jul-15-04 10:22 PM by chimpsrsmarter
because all the uber rich repubs could be pouring money into 527's and they're not. Could be a very good sign of things to come.

16. Isn't it?
Its a great sign that we are raising so much money. That means people are definitly not passive about this election. No one would have ever thought Kerry would be close, much less ahead in fund raising.

17. I'm trying to do my small part.
And have you noticed how the media whores have stopped using the phrase "Bush's huge war chest?" How many times did we hear that nonsense as if it were something to boast about? Well, I guess we showed them.

Keep the fives and tens coming to the Kerry campaign.

18. I think that "huge war chest"
has sprung a leak. After the convention it will be twice as important to direct our money to these groups.

19. You can also donate locally, via the "Dean Dozen". . .
Every two weeks, Howard Dean's group Democracy For America
www.democracyforamerica.com (then click on "candidates")
sends out a list of 12 candidates running for local offices in the various states that they have deemed worthy of campaign suppport and funds.
