Paul Cellucci leaving ambassador's post: report
Fueling speculation he's heading south for a return to elected office, the American ambassador to Canada will leave his post early next year.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy says Paul Cellucci will leave Ottawa no matter what happens in the November presidential election.

Appointed envoy to Canada in 2001, Cellucci's time in Ottawa has been marked a decline in diplomatic relations with Washington.

Outspoken in his criticism of Canada's military capacity, Cellucci also stoked controversy with his comments on the deportation case of Maher Arar.

1. He was Governor here in MA before he bailed...
... leaving us with Jane "Not So" Swift as acting governor.

I feel your pain. Paul Cellucci was a prick among pricks. He thought he'd jump on the gravy train with Bush, and now he's bailing because he knows that it's being derailed.

4. He's got no frikkin' chance against the Dems
in the senatorial race, and he knows it. He's an utter jerk who's completely incompetent at whatever he touches.
I wouldn't be surprised if Canada had complained about him to the State Dept.

6. I'm surprised the Liberals didn't just outright punt him from Canada...
Seriously this guy was a joke. Is this the best guy Bush can send to the U.S. #1 trade partner?

In the immortal words of Cheney. "Go Fuck yourself" Paul...

7. He is a reliable Bush family courtier
Mass. Governor Romney is ever needful to curry favor with La Famiglia Arbusto...so don't rule Penniless Paul out by any means.
He is a selfish tepid hack willing do anything to advance his own cause...in that light her is the perfect candidate.

My take on it can be found at:

9. Not a minute too soon.
What a despicable excuse for a human bean that guy is.

I guess it would be too much to hope that the next ambassador is thoroughly vetted before being accepted.

10. Allow me to add my voice to the chorus
Congratulations on your departure, you arrogant toady!

He seemed to have the idea that Canada should be about as "sovereign" as Iraq is now. He and that fortress embassy here in Ottawa can both go Cheney themselves. Won't be missed, nuh uh!

13. was it something I said?!
Oh, gee, Paul. I'm sorry. I know I've been a little bit critical of you here at DU. (As in -- demanding that you apologize to Maher Arar and his family for telling the world that you had information that he was a terrorist, and then playing coy about it.)

But I really didn't mean for you to take your ball and go home like this. For one thing, you've been the perfect representative for your administration. Even my American friends delight in pointing to you and saying, "see the type of person we have to put up with?" Please come back! Paul?!!!

15. Cellucci Stands No Chance; Andy Card though...
Remember Bush's chief of staff Andy Card is also from MA -- I would predict that Andy Card would have a better chance to win the Senate Race than Cellucci.

17. Canada Must Join Star Wars: Cellucci (Monday, July 12, 2004)
Josh Pringle

The U-S ambassador to Canada says it's critical the Canadian government join the missile defence program.

While attending the Calgary Stampede, Paul Cellucci said the North American Aerospace Defence Command could suffer if Canada decides "to take a different route."

Cellucci told reporters "It's in Canada's security interests to be at the table.''

Just days after the federal election, Prime Minister Paul Martin informed American officials he would soon decide whether Canada will join the U.S.-led missile defence program. Sources on both sides of the border indicate privately that Canadian participation is seen as a near-certainty.

19. O frabjous day! Callooh, Callay!

And whenever it is, it won't be a nanosecond too soon.

Condolences to the USAmerican cousins -- but while you may not deserve him, he's yours, and we really don't deserve him.

Maybe somebody can dig up an actual diplomat for this diplomatic post next time around.

I gotta admit Lisa's right, though. He did a fine job of representing his administration!
