Poll Finds Dwindling War Support -CBS/AP
(CBS/AP) The public continues to grow more critical of the war in Iraq, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll. For the first time, a majority of Americans (51 percent) say the U.S. should have stayed out of Iraq. Another 45 percent say going to war was the right thing to do.

In other findings, 56 percent of Americans say the war is going badly for the U.S., up from 36 percent a year ago. And nearly two-third of Americans (62 percent) say the war has not been worth the cost.

The poll also found that 60 percent of Americans think the U.S. should not attack another country unless it attacks first. Thirty-three percent say the U.S. should strike first if it believes another country may attack it.

Thirty-four percent of Americans think Iraqis are safer now than an interim government is in place. Another 12 percent believe Iraqis are less safe, while 48 percent don't see any change.

5. Good to hear they're waking up
But, honestly, it seems as if everything is flags and roses people are okay with invading another country. It's only if things get Cheney'd up that they think "Hey, being a global bully isn't such a good idea." Unjustified war is wrong whether it's going well or not.

8. While I believe that a 1% approval for Bush is way too high -
this must represent his core base support. Realistically speaking, I do not believe that his approval ratings could ever go lower than 33%.

10. What took the public so long to wake up?
Most of us here at DU said this BEFORE his little war for oil fiasco. The American public is sometimes a very disappointing lot.

11. naw, i like the timing. think about it... bushco is being marginalized
slowly and inexorably, and rove was never prepared for this. he needs to be ready for the home stretch, and he just can't quite seem to get off first base. i love how everything they intended to base the campaign on is turning to uneven footing.

the public is a sleeping giant. bushco has been running roughshod over them for a long long time, and the public is finally waking up and getting irritated... and when the giant wakes up fully, look out.

12. In my daily newspaper today,
(The Oregonian), the governor said he was very concerned that the last of the Oregon Guards were rounded up and shipped off to Iraq.

He is very worried because now we have no guardsmen to help with fires, which have become more intense and out-of-control each summer. Governor Kulongoski said, "This is a situation which has gotten worse. There has got to be some way to end it".

Not exactly an endorsement, is it?

14. Here;s the deal with Iraq regarding this election
I think the Repugs have gone down this road and there is no going back. In other words, the public is slowly making up its mind on Iraq and they're not likely to change them back again to make Iraq a plus for Bush in time for the election. The sequence of events has been set and it's almost unstoppable. If these numbers continue much longer, it would take a cataclysmic shift in events over there to change their minds. Translation: Ain't gonna happen.

Whether that is enough to sway the election is up for debate, however.

15. But the "war" is over!
Iraqis are in charge now & everything is peachy! That "bad" war stuff is all in the past. Rummy has been been put in cold storage, the "tokens" (Colon & Condi) are laying low and even Wolfowitz has been told to "be invisible". Don't you get it folks?... It's time to change the subject.... Too bad the chimp's lil' consitutional amendment disstraction didn't work! HA!
