Bush quietly meets with Amish here (Lancaster, PA)…offer prayers
LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - President Bush met privately with a group of Old Order Amish during his visit to Lancaster County last Friday. He discussed their farms and their hats and his religion. He asked them to vote for him in November.

The Amish told the president that not all members of the church vote but they would pray for him.

(snip)

Stoltzfus reports: “It took a while to get them through the metal detectors as these were farmers and shop men, with vice grips, pocket knives, and nuts and bolts in their pockets. Some ladies had baby gear. All pockets had to be emptied.’’ When the Amish were “found not to be a serious threat to national security,’’ they were allowed inside the office area of Lapp Electric and waited about 30 minutes for the president to appear.

“Babies got restless. Children squirmed,’’ Stoltzfus reports. “Suddenly the president and five Secret Service men stepped into the room. One housewife said, ‘Are you George Bush?’’’

(snip)

“One of the young girls wanted to give Bush a whoopie pie cookie,’’ Stoltzfus says. “Bush declined it. The Secret Service man took it, as presidents aren’t supposed to eat untested food.’’

At the end of the session, Bush reportedly told the group, “I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job.’’

30. Don't you wonder where the press is?
As long as he is serving the neo cons purpose they don't care if he is mentally ill. They are probably feeding his delusions. When he slurring his words and such I often wonder if he isn't drugged or something. Probably not, but it's too frightening to think of someone like him being the most powerful person in the freeworld.

55. The last time I heard a statement this nuts,
it was from the Son of Sam saying that God talked to him through a dog. He spoke to the Amish about their hats and their religion. I would give anything to hear a transcript of that conversation. "Gee, you folks wear cool hats." What an embarrassment.

"I was only following God's orders, honest!" sorta like Flip Wilson's "Geraldine" character, who did things because the Devil made her do them. Like Geraldine, except for the fact that Geraldine had a certain charm. And W has none.

78. I've been saying exactly that for months...
He can't admit error because he believes that he is doing god's will. If he were to screw up, that would mean that god was not perfect and destroy his whole belief system. He is a total whack job and probably believes that he is without sin. Having him anywhere in the line of command of the world most powerful military is dangerous. Having him at the top is just plain insane.

50.  He said, "I trust God speaks through me" to the Amish?
In the first place, Amish are not the least bit interested in national politics. The only time they will even participate in any governmental affair is when it directly affects their livelihood or threatens their lifestyle and religion. Any participation in politics is frowned on by the church, if not totally forbidden.

Secondly, if they knew he was going to use them as a political tool they would not have even been there. Amish hate being exploited by the English for any reason.

And third, that line about God speaks through me is just about the dumbest thing he could have said. The Amish do not believe that God speaks through any mortal man, that's why they have forsaken organized religions as we have come to know them. Even their own church elders are not seen as "men of God" but as ordinary people just like themselves who are only chosen as elders because they happen to have the most experience in church matters.

If he really wanted to make any points he should have eaten the whoopie pie. That's something that would have impressed the Amish more than his bullshit about God speaking through him. They're not very impressed by a man who would turn down good food.

I'm quite sure that the only reason that they were present was out of curiosity, sort of like when the circus used to come to town.

Hell, they were probably not even real Amish, just some of those phony actors from one of the local tourist attractions like Historic Strasburg or Abe's Buggy Rides.

You know, Big Guy, I keep gettin' hassled by supposed Christians who complain about me launching that I-rack war. Think you could clue them in that Jesus was kinda way off base with that peace shit, and turning the cheek and all that liberal stuff. I mean these people gotta understand that lots a people ain't nowhere near as good as us and it's ok to hate 'em or kill em they don't like us. How 'bout having a little talk with your Boy about that. Meantime, I'm gonna tell my Dad he shouldn't feel bad I never asked him about going to war with I-rack. Sure he had all that experience and all, but... Hell, he's just not as with-it as Ma and me. A-right Big Guy, gotta go. Seeya.

25. Bwahahaha, the first thing that came to mind was Weird Al.....
Amish Paradise
by Al Yankovic

Lyrics:

As I walk through the valley where I harvest my grain
I take a look at my wife and realize she's very plain
But that's just perfect for an Amish like me
You know, I shun fancy things like electricity
At 4:30 in the morning I'm milkin' cows
Jebediah feeds the chickens and Jacob plows... fool
And I've been milkin' and plowin' so long that
Even Ezekiel thinks that my mind is gone
I'm a man of the land, I'm into discipline
Got a Bible in my hand and a beard on my chin
But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine
Then tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699

We been spending most our lives
Living in an Amish paradise
I've churned butter once or twice
Living in an Amish paradise
It's hard work and sacrifice
Living in an Amish paradise
We sell quilts at discount price
Living in an Amish paradise

A local boy kicked me in the butt last week
I just smiled at him and turned the other cheek
I really don't care, in fact I wish him well
'Cause I'll be laughing my head off when he's burning in hell
But I ain't never punched a tourist even if he deserved it
An Amish with a 'tude? You know that's unheard of
I never wear buttons but I got a cool hat
And my homies all I agree I look good in black... fool
If you come to visit, you'll be bored to tears
We haven't even paid the phone bill in 300 years
But we ain't really quaint, so please don't point and stare
We're just technologically impaired

There's no phone, no lights, no motorcar
Not a single luxury
Like Robinson Caruso
It's as primitave as can be

We been spending most our lives
Living in an Amish paradise
We're just plain and simple guys
Living in an Amish paradise
There's no time for sin and vice
Living in an Amish paradise
We don't fight, we all play nice
Living in an Amish paradise

Hitchin' up the buggy, churnin' lots of butter
Raised a barn on Monday, soon I'll raise another
Think you're really rightous? Think you're pure in heart?
Well, I know I'm a million times as humble as thou art
I'm the pious guy the little Amlettes wanna be like
On my knees day and night scorin' points for the afterlife
So don't be vain and don't be whiny
Or else, my brother, I might just have to get medieval on your heinie

We been spending most our lives
Living in an Amish paradise
We're all crazy Mennonites
Living in an Amish paradise
There's no cops or traffic lights
Living in an Amish paradise
But you'd probably think it bites
Living in an Amish paradise

Yuck

31. I just realized. Bush is lying. It's fake..
Here's my theory: Bush doesn't REALLY think God speaks through him, or that he was chosen to lead the country. Remember when he first "took" office? He was joking about being a slacker student, and a partyer. He was on permanent vacation. He woke up late, jogged, played video games, took naps, etc. After 9/11, I think Rove, et al, decided that the only way Bush was going to get re-selected, was through the Christian vote. Also, there is A LOT of money from the Right WIng Christian machinery. It's a ploy.

Ponder this... If Bush believes that God speaks through him, did God say: "Adam Clymer, major league asshole". Did God say fuck you to Saddam? Does God make jokes about pussy? Does God take off on profanity laden tirades? Does God think George Bush's daughters are "a pain in the ass?".

Bush is not stupid. He's not compassionate. AND he's not a believer. He's a fake. He's a front for the real government, of Poppy Bush and Cheney. Rove is pulling the strings. Hughes and Rice are his handlers.

Mine is compassion, love, laughter, empathy, gentleness, love, and joy.

Pride goeth before a fall.

And he says that he sees delusional patients like W all the time. He also says that W should either start ignoring the voices in his head or get his medication adjusted.

45. “I trust God speaks through me." What kind of faith in god is that?
If he truly had faith wouldn't he "KNOW god speaks through him"? If he's not so sure it's god, who the hell does he think is "speaking through him"!

“One of the young girls wanted to give Bush a whoopie pie cookie,’’ Stoltzfus says. “Bush declined it. The Secret Service man took it, as presidents aren’t supposed to eat untested food.’’

WTF!?!

So they run them through metal detectors, frisk them and still let people bring Whoopiepie Made Desserts!! WMD's! His chimpiness declined it? He could at least taken it and discreetly handed to a SS agent.

This doesn't call for weird Al Yankovic, it calls for Golden Earring!

48. Total political fiasco
This is the kind of stunt that would FINISH any Democratic contender in a
flurry of unrelenting media mockery. The more details that come out the more completely such a tar and feathering seems absolutely justified.

The free pass has been extended to November apparently.

62. I Trust God Speaks Through Me...
Holy Mother of God, I can't believe he said that. I know the man has a god complex, but he's losing it big time. The national media needs to get ahold of that statement. I can think of a lot of right wingers who wouldn't be happy to hear him say that.

I know people who won't believe me when I say he claims to have a direct link to God and speaks for God. Now, I have to download that story, so I have proof the next time someone tells me that he doesn't have a god complex.

The man belongs in a mental hospital at this point.

I always heard that the Amish don't vote, they don't want to inter-fer in the natural order of things and that includes even voting. Chimp is such a morAn that apparently he doesn't know that and no one thought to tell him. I bet the Amish will pray for him, probably pray that he will grow a heart and a brain. :silly:

He uses the name of the Christian God for political gain, just like Hitler did, and it is obvious, from his murderous actions, that he does not really believe in the Christian God, who is supposed to be a God of Love.

Remarks by the President in Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Lapp Electrical Service, Inc. Smoketown, Pennsylvania 3:16 P.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: ... But we drove through this beautiful countryside and saw thousands of your fellow citizens there. They were so warm and gracious in their hospitality. I'm sorry they're all not here so I can thank them in person. Hopefully, somebody is recording this on a TV camera, so they'll hear my thanks ... We've got a website, georgewbush.com, which is a place where you can sign up and get some marching orders and gives you something to do if you're interested in helping the campaign ... I don't know if you remember, but we used to have on our TV screens, "March to War," and if you're a small business owner or a big business owner, when you're thinking you're marching to war, there's a sense of uncertainty with that ... But lawsuit after lawsuit after lawsuit is running up the cost of medicine and it's running doctors out of practice ... We need to modernize our electricity grids if we expect to stay competitive ... We're very dependent on foreign sources of oil and natural gas ... Community colleges are available, they're affordable, and the best thing of all is they're flexible ...

"Why don't the Amish use electricity?"
"Amish people interpret linking with electrical wires as a connection with the world - and the Bible tells them they are not to be "conformed to the world." (Romans 12:2) In 1919 the Amish leaders agreed that connecting to power lines would not be in the best interest of the Amish community. They did not make this decision because they thought electricity was evil in itself, but because easy access to it could lead to many temptations and the deterioration of church and family life.
<snip>
"Why do Old Order Amish not like having their pictures taken?"
"Old Order Amish and Mennonites forbid photography of their people, and their objection is based on the second commandment, Exodus 20:4: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth"."
<snip>
"Why are Amish schools different?"
"School for Old Order Amish and Mennonites is only a part of the learning necessary for preparation for the adult world. Children have formal schooling in one-room schools to 8th grade and then have a structured learning program supervised by their parents. Classes in the one-room Amish schools are conducted in English, and the children learn English when they go to school. The teachers are Amish and they have no more than an eighth grade education themselves. When the landmark United States Supreme Court decision of 1972 gave exemption for Amish and related groups from state compulsory attendance laws beyond the eighth grade, Chief Justice Burger wrote: "it is neither fair nor correct to suggest that the Amish are opposed to education beyond the eighth grade level. What this record shows is that they are opposed to conventional formal education of the type provided by a certified high school because it comes at the child's crucial adolescent period of religious development."
<snip>
"Both Amish and Mennonites are committed to a lifestyle of peace and non-violence"

77. The most disgusting thing is NOT his remark about God.
I'm surprised by how few critics (so far) have not yet picked up on the most offensive, insane thing here. It's not the remark about God speaking to him.
The worst thing is that a war criminal desecrated the homeland of the most consistently, truly pacifist community in all of American history. (No offense to other pacifists here, but the Amish are extraordinary even among pacifists.)
I'm going to be ill.
You can't make this shit up.
