Vets group to take Ten Commandments Monument on Tour
Here we go, folks. Got this from the Montgomery Advertiser web site. http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/NEWS/StoryAlabamabreak16.htm

The 5,280-pound Ten Commandments monument that belongs to former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, who was removed from office for defying a federal court order, is coming out of the closet -- literally.

The former chief justice has given an American veterans group permission to lift his monument from its spot in a private storage area in the Alabama Judicial Building and take it on a tour across the country. The group will end its tour at the U.S. Capitol.

Moore has asked Congress to allow the monument to be displayed at the Capitol.

“At a time when our sacred institution of marriage is being assaulted by those who would deny the law of God, Americans need to be reminded of our moral foundation,” the former chief justice said today in a statement to the Montgomery Advertiser. “I have agreed to allow the Veterans Standing for God and Country to display the monument in various locations across the country.”

Moore was removed from office in November after defying a federal court order to remove his 2-ton display from the rotunda of the state Judicial Building. The court ruled that the display was an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.

The monument has been out of public view since August of last year, when eight associate Supreme Court justices ordered it removed. State authorities rolled the granite display into the storage area and, according to building officials, a light has been left shining in the room ever since.

David Williams, public information officer for the Administrative Office of Courts, confirmed today that the veterans group would be traveling to Montgomery to pick up the monument.

However, Williams said that details regarding its removal would not be released.

“For security reasons,” he said, “we would just rather not comment on the logistics of the removal.”

2. Oy.
You know, it's not even the 10 Commandments part that bugs me -- it's the part about if I tried to install a several-thousand-pound structure in my employer's lobby without permission, I'd be fired and possibly charged with vandalism. And yet this guy -- a judge -- thinks he can do whatever the hell he wants in his employer's lobby, without consequence, because God is supposedly on his side.

6. Thomas Frank wrote of Repug tactics in the culture wars
This fits right in with his op-ed in Friday's NYT. Frank said that the proposed marriage amendment was a scheme in which the Repugs win by losing.

This looks like the next chapter of the same book.

8. Is this like the "Elvis's Coat" tour?
Remember the SNL bit where Elvis's gold lamé coat was just on a hanger in front of the stage while Elvis songs played... during "All Shook Up" someone sort of wiggled it, then at the end, it descended up to heaven.

Inanimate objects on tour! Catch the fever!

9. Just when you think??????
they can't get any more ridiculous. Who do these idiots think they are????? Is it like the adoration of the golden calf. They apparently have no understanding of the teachings of Christ and somehow believe they are the deliverer's of the message yet they follow the anti-christ teachings via George W. Bush. Keep their monolithic. marble, man-made crap out of my state and my backyard. I don't need some fundie uncaring piece of crap telling me or my family how or what to beleive. I know the 10-commandants, I don't need them to present their chosen piece of granite.

13. What makes these people assume veterans are in favor of this
It seems to me that plenty of veterans have no great love of religious icons, either because these things are "graven images", or because they believe in the separation of church and state.
