Schwarzenegger urges voters to throw out 'girlie-men' lawmakers

TIM MOLLOY, Associated Press Writer
Saturday, July 17, 2004

07-17) 16:10 PDT ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) --

With fast-food restaurants and a video game arcade as a backdrop, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told hundreds of people attending a rally Saturday in a mall food court that they should vote Democratic lawmakers out of office if they stand in the way of passing a state budget.

After saying lawmakers should put the people's interests first through bipartisanship, Schwarzenegger said Democrats were holding up the budget by refusing to back down on issues important to trial lawyers and unions. He drew boisterous cheers from mall-goers when he said the lawmakers were "girlie men" too afraid to admit they favored "special interests" over the public interest.

"If these guys won't do the job, I'm going to announce each of you a terminator," Schwarzenegger said in reference to his well-known action film. "Nov. 2 is judgment day. That's when you go to the polls."

Schwarzenegger's appearance before hundreds of cheering shoppers at the Ontario Mills mall was part of his effort to pressure Democratic lawmakers. The governor and Democratic leaders agree they're stuck on three points -- local government financing and the repeal of two labor laws.

Lobbyist's ties to governor queried again

SACRAMENTO -- Although he vowed not to lobby the man he helped elect California governor, one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's closest political advisers initiated a private meeting between an insurance-industry client and the Republican leader.

(snip)
The meeting created some concern among protective Schwarzenegger aides who worry that Murphy's dual role as advocate for both the governor and his business clients could undercut Schwarzenegger's image as incorruptible.

Along with aiding his insurance-industry client, Murphy has also offered advice to an attorney representing some of the state's biggest Indian casinos. Now the two sides are in talks over whether to expand California casinos in exchange for a larger state share of the gambling money.

Murphy did not respond Wednesday to messages seeking comment. When asked about his business in January, he defended the operation and said there was a ''near Chinese wall'' separating the political consulting and lobbying operations.

Schwarzenegger names donors, supporters to Calif jobs panel

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Thursday he will turn to a privately funded commission studded with corporate chief executives and political supporters to advise him on how to create jobs, streamline business regulation and market state products.
(snip)
"With the litany of corporate CEOs who are also Schwarzenegger donors running this private organization, it's clear their advice to the governor ... will be geared to the business interests they represent," she said.

Robert Stern, president of the Center for Governmental Studies, a nonpartisan group that monitors ethics and campaign finance, questioned why the governor didn't create a state commission subject to disclosure rules.

"This commission can meet in private, a state commission cannot meet in private," Stern said. "It's fairly normal for governors to appoint contributors because that's what they expect for their money. ... If the governor is relying on it, you want the public to be in on what the commission is doing."

How pathetic is he? I realize he's a Republican, but he has an MBA for crying out loud. You'd think he'd learn how to express himself a little better and at least not insult half his electorate. I guess he thought "girlie-men" was a nice way of saying "pussies". What an incredible asshole! It still stuns me that Maria married him.

21. Last I heard he has a 70% approval rating here in CA.
He's a popular movie star and not just a movie star but one that plays heroic-type roles... sort of a muscle-man James Bond. That is the basis of his popularity. So far, he has broken every one of his campaign promises... so his performance in office certainly isn't the basis of his popularity.

45. I'm a Californian
and the 70 percent number was before this whole budget mess, when the honeymoon was still going on. Maybe I'm wrong, but I haven't seen any new polls since this started happening, whereas before the media was constantly gushing over him and pointing out how popular he was. I felt like I did right after 9-11 when everyone was saying how wonderful Bush was, and I'm like, what are you crazy? There were articles saying that California was "enraptured" with Arnold. Enraptured? Ewwwww. Could they lick this man's ass any more?

If anyone has any links to polls taken after this budget mess began, I'd like to see them. I wouldn't expect them to be down too much, but I'm willing to bet they are down. And I think that they will continue to go down as the media stops kissing his ass and more of his true colors appear.

I know one thing though, Arnold has now forever alienated the California legislature. Part of all the gushing media coverage that was going on earlier was about how he was so charming and that he could win over Democrats in the legislature. No doubt, that's the last time we're going to hear that said about him.

27. This is the issue (remember those?) that he's ticked about
Schwarzenegger has been losing patience with Democrats' unwillingness to budge on two issues important to Republicans: repealing a pro-labor law that makes it easier for workers to sue employers and expanding school contracting laws to allow private firms to bid for services such as busing....
...
...the governor said he supported Republican efforts to give schools new privileges to sign outside contracts for bus and cafeteria services — something staunchly opposed by unions and Democrats.

"Why would we go and give the money so much needed for education in this state to the union drivers rather than keeping it right in the classroom?" Schwarzenegger asked. "I always said in my campaign the children should have the first call on our treasury, not the drivers. They should be able to contract out to the lowest bidder."

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-budget16jul16,1,544997.story?coll=la-home-local

Union busting. Some dems are in the way and he's using the louder voice to beat them down. Who knows? It may work in CA.

In a sense, Arnie is one of the most powerful men in the world with the state of California having the sixth or seventh largest GDP in the world.

And you know he was in on the Enron scam, so this simply proves how easily Americans will overlook policy that harms them in lieu of personality/charisma. Reagan and Clinton also proved this.

At the very least Jessie Ventura had some good ideas, and I think we can mostly agree he was perhaps the best of the worst of celeb politicos.

I used to like his show on MSNBC, but I'm sure he made the GE board nervous and was canned for that reason.

43. Is it just tonight or does it seem like The Onion is writing the news
first Arnie using girlie-men, reminding everyone he's a SNL joke, then Cheney appearing with 'almost youthful spirits' to compete with Edwards. Followed by dress codes for undercover air marshalls.

What's going on?

57. Union Bus Drivers
I wonder how the union bus drivers feel about Mr. Pete Johnson the teacher from Walnut, CA. He loves the Governor---claims he got his raise from the Governor and not his Union. Well he may be taken care of , but he wants to slash the throats of the people that bring his students to his classroom---what a selfish pig!

Governor calls foes 'girlie men'
Democrats are outraged over the remark directed at them, calling it sexist and anti-gay.
By Gary Delsohn -- Bee Capitol Bureau

Published 2:15 am PDT Sunday, July 18, 2004

snip...

"About a fourth of the Senate are women," Sen. Gloria Romero, a Los Angeles Democrat who's been working with the Schwarzenegger administration on prison reform, said in a telephone interview. "This is offensive for women. It is offensive to gays and lesbians in the Legislature because of the way that term historically has been applied. 'Girlie man' is a negative term. It is inappropriate for a governor or anybody to name-call someone who, whether he likes it or not, has been elected by a majority of people in a district to represent them."

Assemblywoman Sarah Reyes, D-Fresno, said Schwarzenegger should issue an apology for the "crude and inappropriate" comment. "I think we're seeing the real Arnold Schwarzenegger," she said. "It was alleged in the campaign that he was sexist and that he behaved inappropriately toward women and had no respect for them, and now we're seeing it's true."

Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco and chairman of the five-member Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus, called the governor's remark a "third-grade insult."

"By playing to certain voters' discomfort with gender and sexuality, the governor has exposed himself as a divider, not a uniter," Leno said.

Actually, I'd prefer to look at only babes and beefcake - but we're not all so blessed in the body department!

He sure proves the stereotype of "no pain - no gain, and "no brain, no pain" that is a common affliction amongst body builders!

I feel sooo sorry for the crap that CA has to now put up with.

Just think - there are almost 4 more years to put up with this!

87. Heh heh heh, try almost 8 more years
It would take a miracle to oust him in 2006.

Well, a lot could change, but I'm willing to bet his approval rating is in the mid 70s at least over here.

I don't hate the man, though I don't respect him either. I might respect him a little more if he would just leave the bad-movie persona behind and try to be a governor.

At least he's not executing run-away dogs 10 seconds after they sneak out of the house anymore.

82. wants to repeal labor laws allowing workers to sue employers of violations
yeah, ... the Terminator wants to repeal a law that allows an employee to sue an employer who violates labor laws. So, if, for instance, an employee works OT and doesn't get paid, that employee would no longer be able to sue for his wages. Rather, they'd likely be forced to recover through a state agency that is overworked, underfunded, and understaffed with the officials appointed by the Gropinator. And, no one does that because it's useless.

84. That's right! Every politician must be able to bench 400 pounds.
And do the limbo. And run a marathon. It will only stop when all politicians are HE-MEN.

But then, I've always said what a wonderful world it would be if musicians were politicians.
