Earnhardt Jr. burned in Le Mans accident (CNN)
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/racing/07/18/earnhardt.injured/index.html?cnn=yes

ATLANTA (SI.com) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. suffered moderate burns Sunday morning when the car he was driving was involved in an accident and caught fire while practicing for the American Le Mans Series' Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway.

Earnhardt, who regularly competes in the Nextel Cup series, suffered what track medical officials described as "moderate-sized burns of moderate intensity" in the facial area and lower extremities. For precautionary reasons, he was transported by air to the University of California-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif.

Earnhardt will be held overnight for observation after suffering minor second degree burns on the inner sides of both legs and on his chin.

A hospital spokesman said that Earnhardt was "resting comfortably" at University of California-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif., and would be examined again Monday morning.

2. Glad he's OK
I know he was thrilled to be driving that Corvette and CBS was thrilled to have him there to boost their ratings.

4. don't know how he lost it in turn 8..
turn 10 is usually where you run into trouble. Maybe there was some sand on the course, or he caught a wheel on the kerbing.

19. My 1st thought was - Some Freepers were pissed & rigged the car to
...explode and catch fire....

I guess that is what happens to anyone who "turns" on the Repukes and supports seeing F 9/11....

9. Oh, **American** Le Mans Series.
"the car he was driving was involved in an accident and caught fire while practicing for the American Le Mans Series' Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway"

Oh, **American** Le Mans Series. I was thinking: "Dale Earnhardt's a 'Murkan. What's he doing over there with them French, and their weird food, and wine, and other un-'Murkan ways?"

11. Me too..
.. not to mention that I thoguht that this particular piece of news was quite old, as it's been over a month since my man, Tom Kristensen, took home his 5th consecutive win (6th overall) in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race :D

10. Yeah. Thank Goodness He's Apparently Okay
This is my guy - - my first year as a NASCAR fan was his rookie year, and I adopted him as my favorite driver from the get-go, with Kenseth as my #2. It's worked out well. :D I worry about Junior, though, for obvious reasons, and this was scary until the hospital began calling the burns minor. Hope Little E is back on the circuit very soon.

17. Man! I started an Earnhardt/F-9/11/crash thread, and was ...
... soundly thrashed by everyone. I even said I was kidding, and was told to sod off.

I had to self-delete it and slink away in the night. And yet, here's another thread where folks wink about the same thought.

Like we didn't all think the same thing (even in jest, just for one little moment) ... Bush needs NASCAR dads; Earnhardt goes on record with the press as telling his crew to go see "Fahrenheit 9/11" ... then he's hurt in a fiery crash.

Even one of the Freepers said (noting he was just being funny) that "I knew Earnhardt was shilling for Fahrenheit 911 but this is ridiculous."

I feel validated!
