House members back resolution that says elections will never be postponed

House leaders called Monday for Congress to affirm that presidential elections, to be held this year on Nov. 2, will never be postponed because of a terrorist attack.

The move comes after the chairman of a federal election commission suggested to congressional leaders last week that there should be a process for canceling or rescheduling an election interrupted by terrorism. National security adviser Condoleezza Rice said the administration is considering no such plan.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge recently warned that intelligence indicates that the al-Qaida terrorist network wants to disrupt the upcoming elections.

A congressional resolution by Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Administration Committee, says "the actions of terrorists will never cause the date of any presidential election to be postponed" and "no single individual or agency should be given the authority to postpone the date of a presidential election."

8. This is only a resolution

resolutions declare the "sense" of the Congress about a subject.

I put that word in quotation marks because this Congress doesnt' seem to have much sense.

At any rate, the President doesn't get to vetoe.

NEVER be postponed? sheesh... how about elections can only be postponed by an act of Congress, or something of that nature? i hate to even describe the possible situation whereby this seems like it might be a good idea, but consider if there were no major candidates to vote for? what then?

I can't see one reason why we ever should. We even had elections during the Civil War.

sounds like not even all of the GOP is buying the transparent talk of bushrove. My guess would be this is in part motivated by a renewed sense in the home districts that some of the voters are not too thrilled by all of the actions/rhetoric/chessmoves of teambush...

Note - my heading is not a knock on dems - with the hammerlock DeLay has on committees, etc. in the house - dems are almost powerless to initiate legislation. Thus - this move (by a republican) suggests some real unrest towards the rhetoric coming out of the WH.
