Bush Plans No Rest in Next Month; 2nd Term Agenda Near
(snip)

"He's in a heap of trouble," said Clyde Wilcox, a government professor at Georgetown University said of Mr. Bush. "I don't think the economy is really surging enough to put him back, and the public has a negative view about Iraq. He is a very spirited campaigner and he's got an amazing knack at connecting with the American people and persuading them that he's like them. But there are fewer and fewer people who remain to be persuaded."

(snip)

"We never attacked Dole," said Doug Sosnik, who was President Bill Clinton's political director, referring to Bob Dole, Mr. Clinton's Republican opponent in 1996.

"The notion that Bill Clinton, as president of the United States, would be attacking Jack Kemp is unimaginable,'' Mr. Sosnik continued, referring to Mr. Dole's running mate.

Mr. Sosnik argued that Mr. Bush had put himself in this position because of the way he approached the White House from the start of his administration.

"They did two things when they took office which were completely counterintuitive," Mr. Sosnik said. "One is they acted like they had the mandate, and No. 2, they didn't act like Nixon and go to the middle. They went to their base. It's unusual; it's been the coin of their realm. I think they are paying the price for it now."

2. Actually, I was hoping Shrub would take a 43 day vacation....
....his line of Bushit is really starting to get boring. The * doesn't know what he is talking about. It keeps coming out as babble and preaching. His version of supply-side/tax cut/small business jobs creation is just so much VooDoo babble, I find it hard to believe that anyone is swallowing that crap.

When the academics start talking like this, as opposed to measured tones, it's going to be ugly for you know who. High five.

9. You're right. He's got that insane, intense
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 12:42 AM by cliss
look in his eyes. I've seen it before. You've got this crazed madman walking down the street. He's convinced that he's the messiah or something. People back away, disgusted. This only increases the insane behavior.

The way Bush is looking these days, I'm actually surprised. And I think the movie 9/11 was the death blow for him. He knows that as he's blabbing and sweating and swiping his fist in the air, in the back of his mind he knows all these people have seen the "real" George Bush: cool, calm, suave. Talking to his "base", the "elite". It was right there for the world to see. And the world is seeing it.

Keep talking, George.

Hi, LumberingBear. Welcome to the DU!!! I agree with you.

6. The Republican ticket is not drawing from a position of strength
Cheney's public rants show their insecurities. Bush's increasingly out-of-touch stumping ("God speaks through me") doesn't play well outside of a very small segment of society.

Incumbents are supposed to look comfortable and in control (think about Clinton in 1996). Bush and Cheney are flailing like poor swimmers out too far from the dock.

13. Bush priorities obvious...
Before 9/11 Bush had plenty of time to vacation, sleep and play video games. Nothing about "our" country was very important to him.

Now its all about politics and power and Bush has limitless energy and concern.

His priorities are Himself and His "Base" the "haves and have mores".

15. Uh-oh, someone's going to get cranky
If he doesn't get his month-long vacation!!!

You know, for someone who has lots of problems with "old Europe" he sure likes to emulate their tradition of the 4 week vacation in summer!

16. If anyone hasn't noticed
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 01:52 PM by DoYouEverWonder
they took their vacation in July this year. Maybe they didn't get to spend a month at Crawford, but W has had a very light schedule this month. He's disappeared for days at a time and most other days he's only done one event if any and nothing major. No press conferences, no big speeches, no celebrating 4th of July with the troops in Iraq, nada.

Just another craven political exercise in political "Potemkin Village building." Junior is taking heat for his vacation habkits so"presto, chango" his handlers simply proclaim to the credulous media that he will not be taking a vacation, after he has already taken it. More hollow stagecraft from the Mayberry Machiavellis.
