Bush Bracing for 9/11 Panel's Report
WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) said Wednesday his administration is doing everything possible to prevent another terrorist attack as he braced for a report sharply critical of the government's intelligence-gathering before Sept. 11.

"I look forward to receiving the report," Bush said in the Rose Garden as he signed a bill at the White House to develop and stockpile vaccines and other antidotes to biological and chemical weapons. He made his remarks one day before the independent commission investigating the terrorist attacks releases a 500-page report detailing significant intelligence lapses and other governmental failures that allowed the terrorist hijackings to succeed.

"I will continue to work with the Congress and state and local governments to build on the homeland security improvements we have already made," Bush said. "Every American can be certain that their government will continue doing everything in our power to prevent a terrorist attack, and if the terrorists do strike we will be better prepared to defend our people because of the good law I sign today."

Commission Chairman Thomas Kean, a former New Jersey governor, and Democratic Vice Chairman Lee Hamilton, a former Indiana congressman, were to brief President Bush's national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites), White House Chief of Staff Andy Card and White House counsel Alberto Gonzalez on the panel's findings later Wednesday, presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said. The chairmen are to personally present Bush with a copy of the report on Thursday.

5. You don't actually think there will be anything..
damaging to Mr. Bush in that report do you?

Geebus, yesterday, when I saw a news clip of the assemblance of Hastert and his crew marching down the hallway. (looked like they were physically coming for Berger)...Was reminiscent of the West Wing episode, when John Goodman was appointed President-Pro-Tem. Goodman marched in the Oval office with his entourage of lieutenants ready to take over after Bartlett temporarily resigned because of a conflict of interest...Goodman played Hastert to a T..

2. I've cleared a place on my shelf for it...
...right next to the Warren Report.

I'm highly doubtful the Commission has the guts and motivation to actually tell the truth, or even approach telling the truth. This is bound to be a soft-pedaled, vague toothless report.

I'd love to be proved wrong -- we'll see.

4. What the hell would he be "bracing" for? His GOP-controlled commission...
...sanitized nearly everything that could be even remotely construed as negative about the NeoCons' handling of 911, and what they didn't sanitize, they blamed on the CIA.

6. Better yet...
a couple of the news stories I've read this morning on the 9/11 report made it a point to emphasize intelligence failures that were pre-Bush. I didn't even have to read past the first paragraph to get an idea how the media is planning to spin this.

22. Don't forget what wasn't "sanitized" was removed from the
report by administration officials for "National Security" reasons.

8. It's a Presidential Commission
Bush's commissioner got to write the report. There won't be anything damaging to Bush in it. I just hope that it pisses Clinton off and he speaks out about the warnings Bush received and the actions he took against AL Queda.

10. Wasn't this commission "handpicked" by the Administration?
It is not an independent commission and never made that claim.

18. That's correct -- it wasn't set up to be an independent commission
and it's interesting how that adjective has just kinda slipped in there unnoticed. Now, when someone calls the report a whitewash the WH can point to the commission as being "independent" and therefore unbiased.

And they'll use the term "independent commission" to head off any attempts at setting up a truly independent commission in the future to investigate 9-11 without all the restrictions and stonewalling this commission has had to endure.

16. "...because of the good law I sign today." why does he suddenly sound
like he just moved here from Laos? (certainly, i have nothing against Laotians, forgive me.) i'm just saying, why is his choice of words so bizarre?

and why is law good, and lawyers are bad? and why is it ok for bush to hire a lawyer, but it's not ok for a lawyer to be president?

btw, does anyone have a list of rethug lawyers that were POTUS?
