House Backs Block on Military Housing
WASHINGTON - Making a tough choice with U.S. troops still in Iraq (news - web sites), the House on Wednesday sided with the Republican leadership to embrace spending restraint over an expansion of a program to improve military housing.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, underscored the election-year sensitivity of the faceoff on a military spending bill, saying after the vote that lawmakers might reverse their decision in later legislation.

In a near party-line 212-211 procedural vote, lawmakers signaled their willingness to remove a provision expanding the housing program by $500 million from a $10 billion military construction bill for next year.

The language seemed likely to be deleted from the legislation later in the day's debate. The roll call ran 23 minutes beyond the usual 15 minutes as GOP leaders nailed down the votes they needed to prevail.

12. I watched the so called debate on pints of order on this bill
it was shameful. Ike Skelton had a handful of speakers that let loose but in the end it didn't matter.

14. It wasn't really the GOP
It was pretty much Jim Nussle of Iowa. In the defense of the GOP, most of them wanted to keep the provision in but Nussle stopped them on a point of order because the provision violated the budget, even though most members didn't think that it really did violate the budget.

15. Do the troops and their families even know this? Blog it!!
They always do something like this and then get on TV and radio and say that Dems are against the military. Clinton gave more pay to the troops and cut unnecessary military spending and the Republicans just clamored about how Clinton cut military spending without giving the whole truth. I guess you might say they were having their "Michael Moore moment."

3. The big story here is that they kept the vote open 23 minutes...
longer to get the vote results they wanted.

Why do the repugs house even try to keep up appearances that the House of Representatives is anything other than a rubber stamp for Bush and is being run as a dictatorship.

And they will keep keeping votes open long after they hould have been called so they can strong arm members to change their vote to what the pug leadership wants.

The Third Reich could have learned things from DeLay and the current crop of repug thugs.

And the repugs wonder why we hate their asses so much (ya that means you you freeper dipshit)

Kerry should make an issue of this..

5. Right, the only military housing that gets improved is
officer housing, as in * first budget in 2001. Total increase in military that year was less than 5%. Largest single expenditure in that increase was for officer housing. "B-b-b-u-ttt Clinton DESTROYED THE MILITARY! and * SAVED it!"

9. Some marines stationed at Camp Pendleton who have a wife and kid
live in very cheap one bedroom apartments all around San Diego. Some of them are also on food stamps. I know because I lived there with them a few years back.

This should not have to happen.

10. But it Does Happen
I was an army sergeant living on base and I qualified for food stamps
when I was in the service.

The base that I live on now is preparing houses in an older housing area to be renovated, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen now.

This is the conservative Republicans answer to keeping some of the tax cuts without increasing the deficit. They could have cut the funding for the missile defense system that is probably already obselete, but Rummy has got to have his "beware of dog" sign, even though he doesn't have a dog.

This should show those in the military that the Republicans don't care about them, and all they are is cannon fodder, their lives to be thrown away for the personal gain of one sociopath who believes that God talks to him.

Being a former soldier, I hope the military come to their senses and vote this idiot and his henchmen out of office along with a large group of Republicans in the Congress.

11. The Army of One.....
room apartments that military families are forced to live in.

Catch that part about possibly overturning it later?? To much heat from it and they can just overturn it again. Kerry should sit on this issue, and use it when the repukes lost that window.
Unfortunately the Troops they claim to support are made to suffer for corporate profits.

16. But the VP who has $36Million says...
that Repubs are supportive of the troops while Kerry and Edwards are not. If this warmongering, war profiteer VP supports the troops why doesn't he donate a few million $s to help out the troops?

17. Why Is the Title Not Republicans Back Block on Military Housing ?????
Remember the headline Democrats Block Judge?? from earlier this week - when in fact several republicans joined to defeat the nomination.

I am so sick of this #$%^&&&!

18. Here is My Email to the AP

Who decides the headlines for the AP stories?

House Backs Block on Military Housing
"In a near party-line 212-211 procedural vote, lawmakers signaled their willingness to remove a provision expanding the housing program by $500 million from a $10 billion military construction bill for next year. "

Because this was a near party line vote, isn't the more accurate headline - Republicans Back Block on Military Housing?

I say this because yesterday, I read this AP story entitled: Democrats Block Bush Judicial Pick - why was this story not entitled: Senate Blocks Bush Judicial Pick? In fact as between the two stories, it was more accurate to say the Senate Blocked than the House, because the final Senate vote on Myer was 53-44, meaning that several Republicans joined in this vote. The house vote on Military Housing was party line.

Whatever happened to reporters reporting the facts?

I happily volunteer to read stories and give them headlines that reflect the truth.
