Tuwaitha free of radiation (Iraq nuclear sites)
(Al-Mada) - Minister of Sciences and Technology Rashad Mandan declared that the Tuwaitha site is free from radioactivity. He said during a visit to the site yesterday that most of its buildings will be turned into a developed scientific and research centre in addition to establishing a centre to treat incurable diseases. The site used to be occupied by the Atomic Energy Organization under the former regime.
(Al-Mada is issued daily by Al-Mada institution for Media, Culture, and Arts.)

1. Yes, it's free of radioactivity...
... because it was all looted and removed to other locations.

I honestly don't know Rashad Mandan's qualifications, but I have to wonder who cleaned the site up and when. As I recall, the IAEA teams have not been allowed in to inspect the area after the looting, and their assessment, based on videotape, was that it was a mess.

I hope they're not planning to bulldoze it flat and rebuild on it, because the radon levels will be horrid.

2. Yes, IAEA was only allowed to inspect one of the seven sites
And none of the surrounding population for signs of radiation poisoning.
