New York - The United States Army has long lured recruits with the slogan "Be All You Can Be," but now soldiers and their families can receive plastic surgery, including breast enlargements, on the taxpayers' dime.

The New Yorker magazine reports in its July 26th edition that members of all four branches of the US military can get face-lifts, breast enlargements, liposuction and nose jobs for free - something the military says helps surgeons practise their skills.

who got breast enlargements. All were active duty and enlisted. It available for dependents too, but it certainly isn't confined to them.

and there are enough female dependents in the higher incidence age range that it would really not be good medical practice to refuse breast implants. Do a little elementary research, guys, before trying to make more out of this than it actually is.

I'm not sure post-surgical reconstructive surgery is the reason these women are re-enlisting. I heard the other night they were re-enlisting because they were on the waiting list for the breast enhancement surgery.

In fact, I would say that there are enough female military members and dependents that need breast reconstruction following cancer surgery that the surgeons don't need the "practice" of doing breast enlargements on healthy females.

Sorry, but the "they need the practice" is bullshit. Have them "practice" on children with deformities, burn victims, accident victims that don't have insurance, etc. Remember the military is paid for with our tax dollars. They work for US. If their plastic surgeons need practice, they can "practice" on civilians in need. A plastic surgeon in the military doesn't need practice doing face lifts and liposuction. Those surgeries are strictly cosmetic.

The basic reasoning is practise for the surgeons, as the article states. Army surgeons need this skill for reconstructive surgery on wounded and maimed soldiers.

7. What does liposuction have to do with that, exactly?

I would think farming them out to trauma reconstruction clinics would be a better way to maintain their certification and skill--plus the cost might thus be lowered for those less fortunate who are seriously injured and not just looking for nice boobs or a tummy-tuck.
