Variety: MPAA (Film ratings board) Wooing GOP? |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 01:30 AM by villager
note the typical Rethug tactics -- they're furious a trade organization dared to name a non-GOPper as its head. MPAA is cowering and scrambling... can we expect a "PG" on future "Passion of Christ" projects, and NC-17 ratings on the next F/911?
MPAA wooing GOP? Glickman looks to Republicans for No. 2 By SUSAN CRABTREE
WASHINGTON -- Under fire from Republicans, incoming Motion Picture Assn. of America toppertopper Dan Glickman is already canvassing the GOP to find a candidate for one of the org's top posts.
Three weeks after the MPAA announced Glickman's hire, Republicans on Capitol Hill and K Street are still seething about the studios' decision to bypass former Pentagon spokesman Victoria Clarke, the top GOP candidate for the job, as well as several other Republicans. Instead, the studios chose Glickman, who served as agriculture secretary under Bill Clinton and spent 20 years as a Democratic congressman.
For years Republicans in Washington have made it clear that they want trade orgs to hire GOP candidates for their top posts: Industries should choose Republicans or face the legislative consequences, the not-so-subtle GOP messages goes. Hollywood ignored these warnings in naming Glickman. But he realizes it's up to him to reach out and attempt to mend fences.
Glickman won't officially assume the MPAA mantle until Sept. 1, but he started making calls to Republican lawmakers just days after he was publicly named to succeed Jack Valenti.
There were no signs in recent days of Republican anger abating. In fact, Senate GOP conference chairman Rick Santorum (Pa.) recently discussed the fallout of the decision during a closed-door meeting with Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) and other party leaders.

3. Democrats need to learn from every move the GOP makes - fight back harder! |
|
Democrats should be furious at every company who hires a GOP lobbiest without hiring a Democratic lobbiest.
We need to learn to fight just as hard and mean as they do - otherwise there is no balance. They get everything they want, we get nothing.

4. If politicians want to control the board so much |
|
perhaps that's a good argument for either not having this board at all, or making it more democratic (ie, making it a quasi-governmental body with members appointed by someone who is elected by voters -- ie, congresspeople).

6. Jack Valenti was on the board of Riggs Bank |
|
Also on the plane with LBJ after JFK shot. LBJ adviser, lived in the WH residence (unusual; close). Was debunking the LBJ killed JFK doc. recently--pressured History chan. That's in addition to being a major pain with encrypting dvd's and suing anybody who doesn't like that.
But the LBJ + Riggs stuff-just another one of those little coincidences to file away for a rainy day.

or does a news item like this, every once in a while, really ticks me off. I'm not a violent person by nature, and would have to be really pissed to do something, but inside I keep thinking "Up against the wall, redneck mothers".
All I can say is that WHEN the dems take back the House, Senate, and the White House (maybe not this year, but maybe in 2 years), PAYBACKS ARE GOING TO BE HELL... and I'm not at all interested in being "the bigger party" about this crap.

10. ALL Totalitarian Parties organzie and fight on this level |
|
Which is why they so often easily destroy civilized nations when they get their chance at power.
Intimidation is really all they've got, and it's cousins fear, ignorance, greed...
