STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Organizers of a race for homing pigeons were still scratching their heads in wonder Thursday after about 1,500 of the birds, famous for their ability to find their way home, went missing during the contest.

Of the 2,000 pigeons let loose last week, only about 500 have returned to their lofts after the 150-kilometer (93 mile) flight between the cities of Ljungby and Malmoe in southern Sweden, said Lars-Aake Nilsson of the Malmoe Homing Pigeon Club.

"The weather was perfect -- no rain, no thunder and no strong winds," he said.

"I have worked with pigeons since 1960 and have never experienced anything like this," Nilsson said, adding that the birds might have been thrown off course by subtle changes in the earth's magnetic field.

and I will need ask him about this. He has been racing and breeding pigeons for more than twenty years and might be able to provide some insight. BTW he has sold some of his top racing pigeons for as much as $15,000 to people in Japan. What's interesting he's involved in pigeons and his wife is involved in showing and breeding miniature horses......neither one a typical hobby.

CNN recently reported on the findings of this group at Oxford, who study how homing pigeons navigate.

Apparently, the pigeons weren't using magnetic navigation, but were navigating primarily via ground features. It is pretty clear from this map that they are following roads.

I have often wondered what would happen to birds under a re-alignment of the magnetic poles (this happens occasionally). Birds depending on their magnetic sense would be confused as a species, and would probably lose their magnetic sense to natural selection. This, of course, would lead one to suspect that magnetic navigation in birds isn't as sensitive as was previously thought, and that it is used primarily as a long range guide.

I suspect that birds with short range migration patterns probably do not have their magnetic sense as well developed as long range ones. Clearly, there are birds that migrate over large bodies of water, so the magnetic navigation theory cannot be excluded outright (there is a large body of data that supports this).

When I lived in the San Fernando valley, I had a flawless sense of direction. Same in Los Angeles and Houston, Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Put me anywhere and I can tell you, even on overcast days, where north, east, south and west are.

The one city where my sense of direction was completely shot was San Francisco. For the longest time I had NO clue as to why my directional sense was off kilter in The City. One day, on the bus, I was chatting with a woman and the topic of directional sense came up.

She commented "Well, everywhere else, I always know exactly where I am, but here, I couldn't tell you to save my soul! I have to keep looking at street signs to find out which way is north." When I commented on wondering why that was, she said "Well, it makes sense, doesn't it? You have the electric street car wires overhead, the high energy field of the BART trains under the ground, AND The City is surrounded on three sides by water. We're in an electro-magnetic vortex. Compasses don't work well in The City, either."

I was gobsmacked! I lived in SF for nearly 10 years, and I never DID learn to find my way around the place!

SOUTHERN Africa is experiencing weird vibes, according to scientists studying one of the more profound upheavals awaiting planet Earth.
This forthcoming revolution is a reversal in the Earth's magnetic field, an event that occurs every 500 000 years or so.
Signs that the reversal is about to happen again are nowhere more apparent than over Southern Africa, according to Dr Pieter Kotze, head of the geomagnetism group at the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory in the southern Cape.

Satellites in low-Earth orbit over Southern Africa are already showing signs of radiation damage suffered as a result of the Earth's magnetic field weakening above our part of the planet. The field forms the magneto sphere, which, like the Earth's ozone layer, protects the planet from the sun's harmful radiation.

Other symptoms destined to become apparent in the years ahead include the aurora australis, or southern lights. Usually seen only over the South Pole, these will become visible closer to the equator as the Earth's magnetic field weakens and disappears. Eventually, on past form, the field will reappear but with magnetic north and south pole changing places, as they have done for billions of years.

According to an article in the New York Times this week, the change will be devastating for migratory animals such as loggerhead turtles, which use the Earth's magnetic field to migrate 8 000km around the Atlantic. Bees, swallows, cranes, salmon, homing pigeons, frogs and eagles may also lose their way between breeding and feeding grounds.


Commenting on the New York Times report, Kotze said that the decay in the Earth's magnetic field was becoming increasingly apparent in "the South Atlantic anomaly", a huge deviation in the Earth's magnetic field discovered with the help of the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory.This month, the European Space Agency (ESA) approved a multimillion-euro space mission, called Swarm, to measure the anomaly, which stretches from Southern Africa towards South America.

The ESA's scientists believe that this anomaly, as revealed by the occasional "geomagnetic jerk" to which our part of the world is prone, will provide a clue to predicting the next "flip" in the Earth's magnetic field, now 250 000 years overdue - as these things go. Three ESA satellites, flying in low-Earth orbit (400km to 500km up) after their launch in 2009, will measure the variation over Southern Africa.


At the boundary between the mantle and the outer core (more than 3 000km below Southern Africa) disruptions were occurring in the flow of the Earth's liquid outer core (mostly iron), he explained. This created "a reverse dynamo situation", which is becoming increasingly apparent as variations in the magnetic field above the Earth's surface.

Earth's magnetic field, which is essential for all living organism is weakening. Consequences could be quite drastic.

Researchers claim that the process has begun 150 years ago. Magnetic field force has already decreased by 10-15%; the process continues. Satellites have already determined changes. In case the magnetic field will drop to zero, the so-called magnetic reversal will most likely occur. As a result, North and South poles will exchange positions.

Analogues situation took place 780 000 years ago, in times when early humans were just beginning to learn to make stone tools. Scientists presume that the reason behind such anomaly may have something to do with the whirls of molten iron inside the Earth's core.

One can hardly predict consequences of such global cataclysm. First of all, and this is the most evident, our planet will become vulnerable to solar radiation; under normal circumstances, magnetic field protects the earth from their negative influence. Secondly, many birds and animals that normally rely on the magnetic field in times of their seasonal migrations will also suffer. Even though the "flip" is not instantaneous, evolution is a more time consuming process. Consequently, animals may simply be unable to adjust to the change.

Humanity will also face difficult times. All navigation systems will no longer be of use. More so, radio communications systems, including cell phones, will be filled with noise. Such occurrences can be observed quite often during strong magnetic storms.

Some scientists, however, still remain rather skeptical in regards to such total magnetic reversal. American geophysics professor John Tarduno stated in his interview to The New York Times that his colleagues had even made a bet in this respect, even though none of them will witness victory. According to specially created computer generated model, the magnetic reversal will take place in approximately 2 000 years.

Coming to America as a young man from his native country (Austria-Hungary) with only four cents in his pocket, he first worked for Thomas Edison, but the two men were totally unlike one another. This was disturbing until he learned to control it and the effect seemed to diminish as he grew older. In his later years he spent part of each day feeding pigeons, bringing injured birds back to his apartment to care for them. Despite his fear of germs, he was often seen in the park with pigeons covering his arms. He even had a favorite white pigeon who visited his window at the hotel where he lived

There were other things about him that made some of the science establishment shun him. He once heard a regular pattern of signals coming over his receiving equipment and said he was hearing a message from Mars. This produced its share of ridicule until the famous Lord Kelvin publicly stated that he agreed with Tesla, that the messages were from Mars. Tesla believed there was plenty of other life in the universe and talked often about communicating with other life in the solar system. Throughout his life he disagreed with Einstein’s idea that nothing went faster than light and he never bought into relativity. Tesla believed the universe was filled with “ether” that was the source of matter. He said that matter had no energy within it that it did not get from the ether. It is undoubtedly these ideas that has endeared him to more recent proponents of non-Einsteinian ideas. There are still modern believers in the ether and debunkers of relativity.

But I could not help but notice that Tesla’s life coincided with the life of Edgar Cayce (who died in 1945) whose life readings revealed much about the technology of Atlantis. According to Cayce, the power generator for Atlantis was a huge crystal that provided the power for vehicles that went over land, through the air, and under the ocean. This was certainly a wireless technology. Tesla thought one of his power towers could provide the power for vehicles and machines at a remote distance. Could Tesla, with his extreme sensitivity, have been getting messages across time from Atlantis, or could he have been a reincarnated Atleantean engineer? Or, as a writer named Arthur Mathews alleged, could he have been from the planet Venus? (Check out a film called The Man Who Fell to Earth starring David Bowie as a man who descends to earth to give humanity new technology.)

Tesla had shown some psychic ability, seeing the death of his mother in his mind before it happened. He had extremely acute hearing and great sensitivity to nature, detecting the resonance of the earth. He felt both the earth and the upper atmosphere could be conductors of power. He would have found ridiculous the notion that his ideas came from Atlantis and never was attracted to occult ideas. On the contrary, he worked at finding mechanical explanations for everything, even his own clairvoyance. Although he had the ability to “see” pictures in vivid detail, he maintained that these were always manifestations of things the viewer had actually seen somewhere. He would have rejected the idea that they came from the spirit world or from a memory of a previous lifetime. That has not stopped others from speculating about his extraordinary powers. It is possible, of course, that the only explanation needed is that Nikola Tesla was simply a whole lot smarter than most people.

The other interest in Tesla springs from what occurred when he died. The US government, which had declined to offer the inventor a contract for work on any number of promising inventions (including radar, robots, and guided missiles) he had offered them, sent agents to swoop down on his hotel apartment and sieze his papers. The main agency involved was the Office of Alien Property, although Tesla was NOT an alien (in the sense of not being a US citizen), but had years ago become a naturalized US citizen. He was so proud of his US citizenship that he kept his certificate in a safe wherever he was living or working. He kept better track of it than he did of the many medals and awards he received over the years. Most of his writings were in his adopted language, English, although he was fond of Serbian poetry.

It is known as the geodynamo. In a car's generator, the same principle turns mechanical energy into electricity. No one knows precisely why the field periodically reverses but scientists say the responsibility probably lies with changes in the turbulent flows of molten iron, which they envision as similar to the churning gases that make up the clouds of Jupiter.

Worringly high levels of radioactivity have been discovered in southern Israel's underground water table.


According to scientific research published on Wednesday, the soaring radioactivity levels measured in the Negev Desert and in the Arava valley are caused by natural radioactive elements such as uranium and radon gas.

But Professor Avner Vengosh, who co-authored the study by Ben Gurion University, dismissed any relation between the abnormal findings and the nearby nuclear plant of Dimona, also in southern Israel.

Contaminated water?

"This phenomena has spread throughout the area," he said, referring to Jordan and Egypt's Sinai desert.

"We discovered concentrations of radium reaching up to 10 times the normal average in (Israel's) water table," he added.

Officials in the environment ministry have advised local fish farmers not to use the water for fear it will contaminate fish destined for human consumption.

The agriculture ministry insisted however that no contaminated fish had been found in the area.
