ANAHEIM – Tens of thousands of Democrats may invade Orange County in 2008. And Republican Mayor Curt Pringle is ready to send out the invitations. But he'd be just as happy to see his Republican brethren come to town. Both are possibilities as Anaheim makes a bipartisan play to host one of the national political conventions in 2008.
City officials will host two receptions - one at the Democratic convention in Boston next week and another next month at the Republican gathering in New York City. They hope Anaheim's warm weather, proximity to recreation and the West Coast's largest convention center will draw what could be a $100 million-plus economic boon to the region.

Flint said the Anaheim pitch will include extolling the benefits of the Convention Center and its 815,000 square feet of exhibit space, as well as the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, which can hold up to 19,000 people. The Pond could be used as the marquee venue for prime-time events, like a nominee's acceptance speech.
Orange County would be a natural fit for the Republican convention. There are 670,000 registered Republicans in the county, while Democrats have 424,000 registered voters. But Democrats recently have made themselves more visible. Former President Bill Clinton, presumptive presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry, presumptive vice presidential nominee Sen. John Edwards and the Rev. Jesse Jackson have made appearances here in the last month.
