Sensing Democratic victory, Pakistan shifting stance

WASHINGTON: Sensing a Democratic victory in the November election, the Pakistani establishment has begun to “spread the risk” by making gestures to the Democratic Party.

One indication of this new shift in the hitherto pro-Republican stance of the government and its Washington embassy is the attendance at next week’s Democratic Party convention in Boston of a senior embassy official.

It has not been forgotten by Democratic circles that former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has said the Pakistan was hoping for a Bush victory.

The official is going in response to an “invitation” from the National Democratic Institute, said to have been obtained after a certain amount of discreet lobbying.

2. Does this mean the Pakistanis WON'T be providing W...
...with his "dead or alive" High Value Targets during the Dem Convention?

I mean, W already put in the order form and everything, with several dates-of-delivery between now and November, and I'm sure he and VP Darth Vader and the rest are anticipating their gift-wrapped packages.

It would be a shame to disappoint them. But it would be awfully nice for the Kerry campaign if there were no "convention surprises" or "October surprises"!

5. Sounds
like the same CYA strategy that many big corporations play when they donate $ to both parties.

Ultimately they still know who their sugar daddy is...The GOP has always been closer to dictatorships and countries with lots of religious fundamentalists -- they can relate easier to them because they're similar to the base back at home.
