Bickering over politics is tearing New Jersey apart

Who knew that a condiment could spark so much civil unrest?

It all began a few weeks ago, when a few right-leaning lunch customers at City Beans began rejecting the usual squirt of Heinz ketchup on their paninis, saying they did not want to support a company with the same name as the wife of the presidential contender Senator John Kerry. It was not long before strident remarks about US President George W. Bush, Kerry, the economy and the war in Iraq began whizzing up and down the lunch line, with Democrats and Republicans trading barbs as they waited to be served by Narciza Lopez, the assistant manager. "People never used to talk politics here," said Lopez.

"Now every day is like a war. It's making me crazy," she said.

A similar kind of war breaks out each Sunday night around a dinner table in working-class Kearny, where hotheaded political discourse has begun cleaving Josefa Salino's family into two camps. "My parents used to agree on everything and now they're like enemies when it comes to Bush and Kerry," said Salino, an accountant.

"It's hard to enjoy your food when everyone is yelling," Salino said.

What they come up with is honestly something in between their mothers' "Cold Mason Smile" and aWol's 'Fuck You Smirk." And we all saw the twins practicing on last week.

This is all honest FACTS that can easily be analyzed but professional psychologists. And if the tables were turned, visa versa Bush Family Cold Mason smiles compared to Kerry/Edwards genuine smiles, it would be Prime Tme News on every media source in America.

9. I can't speak for Jersey but, dang, there is a lot of tension

EVERYWHERE..... Sometimes it's easy to get away from it, other times it just can't be avoided. Even if people aren't talking about politics, people are simply UPTIGHT for almost nothing. I saw a woman freak out in the grocery today (in our nice laid back coastal town) because she forgot to pick up her newpaper at the check out stand. Someone else picked it up, I guess....this lady was going into meltdown.

My youngster was telling me of people going ballistic in his workplace (fastfood) over a teensy weensy mistake in the order. People driving like maniacs. Just a general "tension" in everyone's face and in the air. Pretty sad.

Mrs. Cat and I were at Target on Sunday, and we saw this woman scream at a stocker about some brand of cat litter that she needed. It was very surreal.

In a way, the bickering in NJ is a healthy sign. At least NJ Democrats aren't rolling over and playing dead -- they're fighting back.

It's hyperbole to claim that a lunch-counter dispute over ketchup is tearing the state apart. NJ is traditionally a swing state in politics -- it's not all democrat or all rethug.

I grant you that the Rethugs are vicious, spiteful and immature. And dumb! They're too stupid to realize that Teresa Heinz Kerry's first husband was a Rethug congressman, and she used to be a rethug herself. Heinz is probably a rethug company.

And just what does boycotting Heinz ketchup have to do with the price of tea in China?
