Gore Assails Bush on Iraq at Convention
Well... that headline didn't take long!

Great speech, AL!!!!! You remain an inspiration, as well as a leader. :D

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=1&u=/ap/20040727/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_convention_rdp_7

Al Gore criticized President Bush for his handling of Iraq, the economy and more on Monday night and urged Democratic National Convention delegates to "fully and completely" channel anger over the disputed 2000 election into victory for John Kerry this fall.

"When policies are clearly not working, we can change them. If our leaders make mistakes, we can hold them accountable — even if they never admit their mistakes," said the man who won the popular vote in 2000 but lost the White House.

<snip>

If you're conservative, there's nothing conservative about piling debt on the shoulders of our children and driving the deficits up as far as the eye can see," the Massachusetts senator said in a jab at Bush.

"Stop and think. Think about what's happening," he added as he campaigned in the state whose bitterly contested recount decided the 2000 election.

9. Well of course it was simple factual reportage!
Didn't you get the Rove fax-blast? Speak of the President, and we call it BASHING. Doesn't matter if you say "George is married to Laura." It's a BASH.

Got it? }(

4. In the same story, the big baby fell and skinned his knee, AGAIN
What a klutz the selected leader of the free world is!

Bush, at his ranch in Texas, fell while bicycling on steep dirt paths during the day. He waved away his medics and continued his ride despite a small cut on his knee.

11. It's NOT a RANCH, damn it!
It's a farm; ranches have horses and Shrub is afraid of horses -- no horses down at that farm in Crawford.

Sorry, I didn't mean to kill the messenger.

6. Good for President Gore...

...to hell with the "hands off Bush directive" from wherever that "directive" came from. After all the BS heaped his way (and the election theft) by the radical right he was rather subdued...:bounce:

19. I was enthralled! And NO it wasn't gratuitous bashing, it was mere
truth-telling. Probably some lame attempt to avoid the heat, so issued by the "they-can-dish-it-out-but-can't-take-it" crowd.

Gore was WUNNNNNNNNderful. Sigh. What MIGHT have been. Elegant, eloquent, willing to laugh at himself, totally warm and human, but with a great sense of earnestness and truth. Completely genuine. The game of Charades doesn't start til NEXT month.

People were talking about it at our neighborhood pharmacy where I had to go get a prescription filled. The behind-the-counter people were just as earnest - asking me if I'd seen it yet, if I'd seen Jimmy Carter, if Clinton had spoken yet. They were eager to hear. All I could do was put my hand over my heart and sigh - "Gore..." THAT is how a President looks, acts, and sounds. A thing of BEAUTY. And THEN, Clinton came out, introduced by Hillary, and just KILLED. I'd bet money that most of the people listening (either there, or watching it on TV or hearing it on radio) were truly struck by how far we've fallen. How it USED to be when there were Brains On Parade in the White House, plus TRUE class and compassion for the human condition and the public good. THIS is how it's supposed to be. THIS is how it's supposed to sound. THIS is how it's supposed to look. THIS is how it's done. Clinton KILLED. Really milked the tax cut bit - taunting the republi-CONS with the notion that - gee, they were awfully mean to him when he was in office, but look what they did for him after he left, and finally started getting rich. A big tax cut he, himself, hardly needed. WINCINGLY good. DEVASTATING!

It was just one outta-the-ballpark home run after another. I missed Carter except for part of a replay I caught on CSPAN. He, too, was earnest and quite forceful. He was like the Gray Eminence, the Conscience of the Party. His presence just sort of lifted everything up to a higher level of nobility. Carter has GREAT gravitas.

People there in the Fleetcenter, tuning in on TV and on the radio, I'd BET, couldn't help but be reminded of how far we've fallen. And how it used to be - which is how it's SUPPOSED to be.

All in HIGH contrast to what dreck we've got now - "the smirky and snarly show."

21. a great set of speakers ...
I also liked how Clinton critiqued HIMSELF for staying behind (along with Bush and Cheney) while Kerry volunteered to go to war. He effectively disarmed both of the arguments that the GOP have been using on him -- that he's now so wealthy he's out of touch with ordinary Americans, and that he's a cowardly draft-dodger. He very cleverly turned it around on them -- "yes I am, and that means it goes DOUBLE for you".

And I didn't expect to see Carter showing so much righteous anger. Coming from him, it really struck home. The dig at Bush -- "John Kerry showed up" -- had me applauding.

16. Here's What Al Said:
"For that matter, are the economic policies really conservative at all? Did you expect, for example, the largest deficits in history? One after another? And the loss of more than a million jobs?"

Similar point, but the wording is different. Did they change the quote, or was this from someone else?

Gore was the only one I missed last night. Not surprised he was taking no prisoners. He's quite the warrior nowadays.
