PHILADELPHIA — U.S. Sen. Trent Lott today told an enthusiastic Neshoba County Fair crowd that Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry is “a French-speaking socialist from Boston, Massaschusetts, who is more liberal than Ted Kennedy.”

It was a line that Lott said he’’d been working on for a while, and it produced loud applause from hundreds of Mississippians gathered at Founders’’ Square, the centerpiece of the historic fair.

Lott also told the crowd that America is fighting a war on terrorism, and ““you don't want to change horses in the middle of the stream.””

Lott referred to the Kerry-Edwards ticket as ““waffles and grits.””

French is a national origin. To suggest that all French, or those who can trace their ancestry to French origins should be discriminated against, not because of their own personal views, but because they are simply "French", are of the French culture and of French national origin is biggoted and discriminatory. Now, we find that Trent Lott, in honoring the rabidly racist segregationist Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday, has said that he thinks that the nation would be better off if Thurmond had won the Presidency in 1948, when Thurmond's racism was at its height.

Here are his exact words:

"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for
president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest
of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all
these problems over all these years, either."

By "problems," Lott means the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act -- laws that finally freed black men and women from the racist Jim Crow laws enacted by people like Trent Lott to keep blacks enslaved.

Thanks to the Washington Post article linked above, here's a little taste of what Strom Thurmond was saying about black people in 1948, the year Trent Lott says Ol' Strom should have become President of these United States:

Did Trent Lott's mother, who once publicly recommended that a bullet be put through the head of a local editor who supported integration, raise the future senator to be a bigot? Or was it his favorite uncle, Arnie Watson, a leader of the White Citizens Council--a more respectable version of the Ku Klux Klan--who inspired the senator's lifelong love affair with race hate?
