Colorado Hispanic voters could sway Nov. election

BOSTON — Hispanic voters in Colorado could play a key role in determining whether John Kerry or George Bush wins the presidential election in November.
Colorado is one of five battleground states for Hispanic voters this election — the others are Florida, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona, said Henry Cisneros, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton administration, who is working on getting out the Hispanic vote for Kerry.
And, if the electoral map stays the same as it was in 2000, Colorado is one of two states that could decide the election, he said Wednesday.
"If Florida stays red and Ohio doesn't change, then Arizona or Colorado wins the election for Kerry," Cisneros said. He said Nevada is important, but wouldn't be sufficient to guarantee a Kerry victory since it only has five electoral votes. Arizona, however, has 10 electoral votes this year, and Colorado has nine.
