Union official sees more AT&T job cuts in KC area

A union leader for AT&T Corp.'s Kansas City-area employees said Thursday that she expects the company to continue to cut back on its local work force of about 3,100.

AT&T laid off 157 temporary employees at its Lee's Summit call center Tuesday afternoon less than a week after it said it would start selling telecommunications services to businesses only and not consumers.

Judi Sterns, president of Communications Workers of America Local 6450, said the remaining employees think they'll be next.

"Everybody's a nervous wreck," she said. "I mean, the handwriting's on the wall."

The employees cut earlier this week were known as "term employees" who worked for about three years and received no severance benefits other than being paid through the end of the week.
