White House eases rules on use of pesticides
White House eases rules on use of pesticides

By JOHN HEILPRIN, The Associated Press

Published: Friday, Jul. 30, 2004

WASHINGTON - The Environmental Protection Agency will be free to approve pesticides without consulting wildlife agencies to determine if the chemical might harm plants and animals protected by the Endangered Species Act, according to new Bush administration rules.

The streamlining by the Interior and Commerce departments represents “a more efficient approach to ensure protection of threatened and endangered species,” officials with the two agencies, EPA and the Agriculture Department said in a joint statement Thursday.

It also is intended to head off future lawsuits, the officials said.

Under the Endangered Species Act, EPA has been required to consult with Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Service and Commerce’s National Marine Fisheries Service each time it licenses a new pesticide. But that hasn’t been happening for some time.

2. what the fuck?
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 05:30 AM by theoceansnerves
do they have someone sitting around just thinking of new and better ways to trash the environment for no reason? or is it just because they can (sometimes i honestly think this is why they do half the things they do.)

on edit: "CropLife America, a pesticide industry trade group, described the new rules as “a sensible approach that strengthens protections to endangered animal and plant species while maintaining access to tested and approved pesticides” used in agriculture, pest control and wildlife protection."

oh, so they did it for some lobbying group. thanks!

3. Wonder why I did not want to see this the first thing?
Did Bush do this for Tom or did some big company give Bush money? In 200 years we have killed off some of our best farm lands and places like China have been farming their land for 5000 years. Maybe we are doing some thing wrong and I think they found it was all this stuff we put on it plus not putting the natural back into the ground. But then God has told Bush some thing else I guess.Go for it George as I think it is one of the things you have not made a mess of. The farming in the country.

6. oh goody
I spent five years litigating pesticide suits, and had to read most of the data provided by the companies for EPA approval.

There is some really bad shit out there, stuff that hangs around, gets in the food chain, and ends up in some mom's newborn. Breast milk is fairly fat-laden, the more to provide needed energy for a toddler. Many of these chemicals dissolve in fats and guess what? Baby gets them all.

As they start to realize that the Oval Office rug is being pulled out from under them.

They will say that "Clinton did it"

Expect an executive order legalizing oil spills. :evilfrown:

on edit: a la Saddam blowing the oilfield on retreat from Kuwait.

They can't see the connection. They think it doesn't affect them because, afterall, they CAN move any damned place they want to live and breath fresh air and drink clean water while the cannon fodder dies and is replaced by more willing cannon fodder!

13. Boy could we turn this around and throw it in *'s face.
Remember the bald eagle, one of our nation's symbols, was once an endangered species because of DDT? It was recently removed from the threatened species list. I've actually seen two of these birds in my neighborhood.

Should not threatening a national symbol such as this bird be the equivalent of burning the American flag? Bush is a phony patriot in my opinion.

14. These bastards can't get out of office fast enough.
Notice how many outrageous things have been done in, say, the past three or four months? Every thing the corporations have wished for and not gotten, this bunch of pricks is ramming through. Maybe they are worried that the party will be over come November? And the scariest thing is, when they lose, just imagine what the last two months of this misadministration will bring, knowing they don't even have to think about election. If you think it's nuts NOW, just wait to see what gets rolled out between November and January. Poor John Kerry will have to spend the first year of his Presidency just undoing all the damage of Bush, never mind put his own agenda into practice.

20. This is, IMO, one of the very rare moments I must ask
what were the Founders thinking?

I'm absolutely certain they knew and understood the concept of what we call "dirty politics", and I am now and have always been perplexed that they allow a "lame duck" President- one who has been elected out- serve in office for two more months.

Why did they allow this? Is there a legitimate reason, by their own standards?

22. That is a very good question.
I keep thinking about this, and it really could be a disaster. Especially if he loses big, because you know how vindictive this administration is. I don't know why they do this.

16. Earth Day April 2004-"I'm the Environmental President"....
That Motherf*cker said in a speech on Earth Day that he has done a lot for the environment as he went on to talking about his plans for the "Wetlands"....I laughed so hard as I heard him say this on NPR and spit out my coffee...My 4 year old said "What's so funny Mommy?" I said to her that I heard the most ridiculous statement in the world and she started laughing too...

Meanwhile, I guess this is his further "environmental" President and protecting our Wetlands plan...kinda like everything else he touches and ofcourse LIES about....
