UK Anti-War Party Wins First Election

Good on, George! They tried to smear him with forgeries claiming he was in Saddam's pay, but who's laughing now?

And fuck you very much, Mr Blair, for splintering the British Left and draining Labour of its remaining credibility as a progressive option.

7. Congrats...the tide is turning :)
btw...is your subject header a reference to the English Fan football announcing team thingy I am now hopelessly addicted to since catching it on cable a few weeks ago??

I don't even know who I'm cheering for, but damn I hope they win just because the announcer was so damned excited about it :)

8. Nope, any resemblance between my subject header and
"the English Fan football announcing team thingy" is purely coincidental. Though that's a shame, because it sounds like it makes a neat allusion.

BTW, welcome to DU! :hi:

5. Hip Hip Hooray! Shrub is fighting for freedom!
He won it in Spain! He's winning it in the UK! And before he's done fighting he'll win it for America!
Pity he's too stupid to appreciate the delicious irony of it all.

'RESPECT is an electoral front, undoubtedly a product of the one election success of the "Socialist Alliance" (SA). The SA was a grouping of various Leninist revolutionary parties which the SWP joined and took over by weight of numbers. The SA hardly made much impact. Its one election success occurred when their candidate to a local council was backed by the local Mosque (due to general anti-war feelings rather than a sudden embracing of socialist principles). During the anti-Iraq war protests, the StWC worked closely with Muslim Association of Britain. Clearly the SWP's leadership saw a potential means by which to get elected and to create a reformist mass party it can be the radical alternative to...

'This was not all. The idea of a "workers wage" for any elected members was voted down at the founding convention, undoubtedly to keep recently expelled Labour MP George Galloway happy. Galloway, who was kicked out the Labour Party for his opposition to the Iraq war, is habitually called the RESPECT MP but, of course, no one voted for him on the RESPECT ticket. This did not stop a mini-cult of personality surfacing during the RESPECT election campaign. His picture was on every leaflet and the ballot papers said "Respect -- the Unity Coalition (George Galloway)." In this, it should be noted, RESPECT is not alone. In Scotland, Tommy Sheridan is used in a similar way by the Scottish Socialist Party.'

...of the far left spending their usual amount of time and effort fighting each other rather than the right wing? Gotta love those marxists fighting each other in the name of ideological purity.

All we need now is an article by the Spartacists (looniest of all on the left) bashing both RESPECT and the anarchists!
