Woman's Dying Wish: Bush Defeated

Loved Ones Asked To Donate To Democratic Cause

http://www.local10.com/news/3598475/detail.html

POSTED: 5:27 pm EDT July 30, 2004
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- A South Florida woman who died this week had an unusual last request. Instead of flower or contributions in her name to a charity, she asked those who loved her to try to make sure President George W. Bush is not re-elected.

Joan Abbey, shown here before her death, wanted most of all to have President George W. Bush lose the November election.

Loved ones said that Joan Abbey was committed to her political passions, even in death.

Abbey was born in Montreal, but lived for many years in Miami Beach and Aventura. Family and friends came from as far away as Canada and California to remember Abbey at the Mount Nebo Jewish Cemetery in Miami.

Abbey, who was a lifelong Democrat, died Monday -- coincidentally on the first day of the Democratic National Convention.

Her sister, Tillie Shapiro, said, "She was just a caring person … She cared about people, and people who were disadvantaged."

Abbey was buried the day after the Democratic convention ended. Her unusual death notice in the Miami Herald said: "You can honor Joan's values by voting against George Bush and contributing to a liberal or Democratic cause."

3. I believe the woman who coined the phrase "Whistle-Ass" for Bush
Was a similar tale, from a year or so back. She was from Minnesota, I think.

7. Yes, I remember that story. Another woman's dying wish...
was for "whistle-ass" Bush to be shown the door. I sincerely hope that these women are fighting for us "behind the scenes". Let's do our part as the living and not let them down.

4. What's so unusual about her request?
Sounds perfectly normal to me.

5. If it's her dying wish, let it be honored. May she rest in peace.
If there's a special section in Heaven for life-long Democrats, I hope she meets up with my mother-in-law. She was a life-long Democrat and would be all over W.

9. Unusual death notice?
I'd say that was a posthumous call to political action!

11. Did anybody else feel like vomiting after reading the quote from
the "democratic" rabbi who is voting for Bush? Give me a break! How dare this putz even preside over her funeral! Can a religious person recuse themselves? If so, I demand that this guy step aside and let someone who can honor Joan Abbey preside over her memorial service.

12. He probably hates Muslims
I think that's one thing he would have in common with Bush.

13. No Bush* bashing?
Even in DEATH?

Coincidentally, the presiding rabbi, Brett Goldstein, is a registered Democrat but is voting for Bush, and he questioned the timing of Abbey's message at such a sensitive time.
