Deciding Where To Draw The Lines |
|
More GOP redistricting? Guess who's this time. Yes, Kucinich's district. And Sherrod Brown's. "I've seen some plans floating around to do some line adjustments," state party Chairman Bob Bennett said." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A16860-2003Aug19.html

1. Ohio Dems look out... more from the article |
|
Excerpt:
Ohio Democrats emerged unscathed from redistricting after the 2000 census when district lines were redrawn to reflect changes in population -- even though the GOP controlled the entire process. The reason? Republicans did not want to anger Rep. Sherrod Brown (D), who threatened to run against Gov. Bob Taft if his district was changed.
Now some Republicans are looking at carving up northeast Ohio, which would reshape the seats of Brown, Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D), and possibly other House members. "I've seen some plans floating around to do some line adjustments," state party Chairman Bob Bennett said.
Brown said the new effort is a White House ploy to expand the GOP's majority in the House. "The question is: How partisan do they want to look in one of the key states in a presidential election?" he said. "There will be a political price to pay for them. That's not a threat; it's an observation."

2. DeLay has absolutely no shame. |

Used to be a gentleman's agreement about only redistricting in Census years, and each side has some safe seats with the rest in play.
This tactic the Repugs are using is completely beyond the pale. They are like kids in a candy store with absolutely no self-control.
Now they they are pretty running things, they are completing a coup, not governing a republic.
Side note: Isn't it about time Democrats and fellow travellers stopped whining about Presidential candidates and geared up to slow down the local and Congressional Repug steamroller?

Considering how the Republicans have utterly bankrupted the State of Ohio, I would relish their attempt to pull such an unethical and naked partisan political stunt. It would be just the thing to get our base fired up!
Dear Mr. Delay, Please come to Ohio and fuck with us. I'll pay your bus fare.

Any renegade Dems from legislature are welcome to stay on my spread. I'll give 'em food, drink and keep the media away.

6. Suspicious Redistricting |
|
This sounds like those bad sci fi movies where they go "back in time" to try and change the future... Maybe it was Karl Rove who invented the thing and has already used it, going back to a day in 2000 when he successful screwed up the ballot in several Florida counties, switching Pat Buchanan and Al Gore's names after the counting machines had been callibrated. We're now living in this altered reality and suffering the consequences. Any fan of Star Trek would know that such a change would have been a simple, bright blip on our day to day consciousness and we'd be none the wiser.

7. Aren't they happy with a 12-6 majority? |
|
Since Brown threatened to run for Governor if they tossed his district last time, maybe he'll run for Senator if they delete it this time.

9. Would love to see Brown run |
|
He would beat Petro or Fat Betty easily. However, we would still end up losing Congressional seats, not a good thing.

10. I'm talking about Voinovich's seat... |
|
Those nicknames are funny, but I'm not sure who they refer to.
I don't want to lose seats either...the mere threat of a Brown run might scare the legislators into not redistricting.

Not sure Brown would run for Senate, its a little late for that. If anything, he'd probably threaten to run for Governor again.
Since Taft can't be re-elected, R's in line for his job include Jim Petro and Betty Montgomery.

11. They won't be happy until we are all silenced |
|
One way or the other.
It matters nothing to them that to silence the politcal vocies of 50% of the nation in their quest for One-Party Imperial Rule because simply put they don't much care for the Fouding Fathers' vision of a moderate nation balanced by the competing passions of the extremes.
Of course, Hitler and Stalin felt the same way. Good thing our Totalitarian Monsters are "kinder and gentler" (for the moment).
