CNN: Truck maker will sell giant pickup (OMG! WTF Alert!)
Edited on Mon Sep-13-04 04:27 PM by kysrsoze
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - For the driver looking for more in a pickup --one that dwarfs the Hummer and the Ford F-350 -- Navistar has just the ride for you.

The CXT, the new monster pickup from heavy truck maker Navistar.
The new CXT -- short for commercial extreme truck and built from the same platform as the heavy-truck maker's typical tow truck or cement mixer -- will be sold starting this week by Navistar's International Truck & Engine subsidiary.

At 258 inches, or 21-1/2 feet long, the CXT is about 4-1/2 feet longer than the new Hummer H2 pickup, and about 2 inches longer than the F-350 Crew Cab. But the way it really towers over what's on the road now is in height. At 108 inches, or 9 feet, the CXT stands only a foot below a basketball rim and more than two feet above the Hummer or the F-350.

"It's not going to fit into the standard garage," said Mark Oberle, a spokesman for Navistar, based in Warrenville, Ill., outside Chicago. "We can see it as a vehicle for business people who want to make a distinct impression. For personal use, it's for people who want to make a statement."

(snip)

Buyers will also have to have a fair amount of money to fill it up --it's projected to get between 6 and 10 miles per gallon of diesel fuel.

http://money.cnn.com/2004/09/13/pf/autos/monster_truck/index.htm?cnn=yes

It weighs 14,000 lbs. on an empty gas tank! This is fucking ridiculous, stupid and dangerous. Imagine some asshole tailgater in this thing. The truck should be banned. Of course, Georgie Porgie et al will love it. Notice the four-wheelers in the bed.

At least around here. If one of my neighbors were to get one (not very likely) I would be dropping a dime on them. I'm not into paying for the damage these things do to pavement.

Take a look where your street leaves a major road, there's likely a sign saying restricted vehicles under to X tons, with X going down to 3 on some roads - making even H2s illegal.

They are sold under the International name, and you can already see them on the roads with tow truck beds. These things are huge, but they're not quite the size of a big rig.

I have been saying to him for a few years now, that eventually every suburban family will want an eighteen wheeler, just like his, the way things are going. It looks like they have the cab now - just need the van to be modified for the suburbs. I wonder if this one has a sleeper?

On edit - put a reefer on this and you can use it to bring home a dozen dozen dozen eggs.

136. Similar trucks have been on the market for years. I wouldn't get excited.
Freightliner sells a similar truck that many buy to pull horse trailers. The only difference is that Navistar chose to put a distinct pickup bed on the back. The Freightliners have a more abbreviated bed heightwise. If you look at it closely you can see it's really a pickup of sorts. Because of commercial licensing requirements, the truck probably has vacuum over hydraulic brakes instaed of air brakes.

I wouldn't worry about the Navistars taking over the highways. They're not as maneuverable as the family SUV. You're not going to fit it into a regular parking space not to mention a normal garage. The engine is probably a DT466 which is a 400+ cu in. six cylinder that's been around since the 70's. When you change the oil in one of those you're not talking quarts, you're talking gallons. Likewise the tires, if you buy cheap ones, will run you at least $800 a set. With tires that size you can at least buy top notch Bandag caps, not available for cars, for the rears which will save you a couple of hundred.

The nice thing about a truck like that is with reasonable care you can run it many hundreds of thousands of miles before pulling the engine.

55. diesels are more efficient FYI
http://autorepair.about.com/cs/faqs/l/bl207g.htm

Diesel engines get better fuel economy simply because they do not need to burn as much fuel as a gas engine to get the same power. Diesel engines are also built heavier than a gas engine to sustain the added stress of the higher compression ratio. Diesel engines do not have an ignition system so you will never have to tune them up. Exhaust systems last longer because diesel fuel exhaust is not as corrosive a gasoline engine exhaust.

It is not unusual to see a diesel engine with 400,000, 500,000 and I have even seen them go as much as 600,000 miles.

The down side is they are fairly noisy. You will get the typical diesel clatter at idle, but that goes away off idle. At normal driving speeds they are as quiet as a gasoline engine. You won't get the same acceleration that you get from a gasoline engine. But a turbo diesel will get up and go fairly quickly. You will need to adjust your driving habits somewhat also.

As for maintenance, 3,000 mile oil changes are a must! Diesel fuel is not as refined as gasoline and the oil will get dirtier than a gasoline engine. I recommend replacing air and fuel filters once a year. If you live in a cold climate, you will need to switch to a winter blend fuel to prevent fuel gelling. There are additives you can put in the fuel to help prevent this as well.

59. Diesel Rules
I run b20 in my f-250 (that I use for my job). You can't tow big stuff with a prius.

The only efficient use for this vehicle is to tow large trailers.
"horse people" use similar looking vehicles already for towing rigs. Some of these folks have CDLs and full sized tractor trailer rigs.

Banning a vehicle is stupid. Lets ban 1100 cc motorcycles because they can go 200mph. Hummers because they are gas guzzlers..etc.

If you don't like it, don't buy it..

45 percent of cars in Europe are diesel. They are much more efficient than gas. Modern diesels do not spout black smoke. And they run for ever. My friend has a 79 Mercedes 240d with more than 500,000 miles on. Still going strong..

I run 20%synthetic (plant oil)fuel and 50% when I can find it. I could run %100 but don't want to turn my garage into a refinery.

You can't tow equipment with a prius. My diesel truck gets better gas mileage than many cars do.

Biodiesel cuts down massively on the sulfur and particulate emissions from a diesel motor.

Mercedes, Audi and BMW have performance diesels that really move. The Mercedes gets mileage in the 40's. Volvo built a turbodiesel wagon in the 1980's that got 100mpg and did 0-60 in 8 seconds. No kidding. Read it in Popular Mechanics.

VW diesel gets the same gas actual milage as the hybrids do. And they have a much longer life than the average gas engine.

45 percent of cars in europe are diesel for a reason.

Biodiesel is also a signifigant move away from petro based fuel.

126. Audi's A8..
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 07:23 AM by LibLabUK
The BBC show Top Gear managed to make the run from London to Edinburgh and back on one tank of diesel in the new Audi A8. That's over 800 miles on one tank of fuel. Audi themselves didn't think it was possible to do this.

The A8 has a 90 litre (22.5 Gallon) tank so, this equates to 8.88mpl (35.5mpg) in actual driving conditions.

And this is a big luxury car with a 3 litre engine.

That's pretty amazing.

129. Zafira Diesel in Europe
I live in Europe. I own an Opel/Ford/Vauxhall/Chevrolet Zafira
(7-seater 2.2l DTI engine 125HP turbo diesel). Doing mainly
mixed Higway/city driving, I make 35-40 mpg. With 5 adults and
their luggage aboard, at a constant 85 mph and with AC on, I
made 37 mpg on a 500 miles trip. I have to change the oil
every 19,000 miles (30,000 km) or every year. Also, there is a
particule filter on the exhaust. This engine is far from
belonging to the last generation of common-rail diesels. In
fact it is just a (very well optimized) high-pressure pump-fed
16 valve turbo diesel. The 4th generation common rails are 30%
more efficient and use 2000 atm fuel injection....
By the way OPEL (German) is owned by Ford (American/German),
which is itself owned by Chevrolet. Why is this car (or
similar ones) not sold in the US?

157. Particulates
are measured in micron sizes. Smaller micron particulates like those in asbestos, a carcinogen, and pre mix concrete vs larger particulates from wood smoke or diesel soot are handled differently by the body and harder to expel. The sulfur content in diesel determines its output of soot. Modern diesel motors are much cleaner than those produced 10 years ago.

The thing with diesel is that the entire commercial fleet runs them. Making inroads in diesel technology, biodiesel for example, can make large changes in the pollution levels in a short time.

B20 reduces particulates up to 40 percent, in a new diesel this meets or exceeds epa standards by a large margin.

30. Oh, this should be entertaining.
At 14,000 lbs, this thing will crack peoples driveways as they try to park, and many CXT drivers will find themselves banned from many bridges and residential streets. Personally, my street has a 9,000 lb weight limit, and I can GUARANTEE that if any of my neighbors bought one of these, they'd be getting ticketed daily.

The article also says that this thing is apparently built on the same frame as the International tow trucks, meaning that it's not designed for performance or emergency handling (sudden turns will flip this thing on its side, and its AIR BRAKES provide very little feedback to the driver). For all practical purposes, it'll be like driving a big rig.

It's a shame that CDL's aren't required until the vehicle hits the 26,000 lb mark:eyes:

45. Many already do
Check the weight limits on your local streets. As I said in a different post here, my residential street has a 9,000 lb weight limit and I will certainly be calling the police to complain if any of my neighbors pulls one of these things into their driveway.

I have both a long haul truck driver and a tow truck driver that live on my street, and I've had to turn them in before when they refused to stop driving them down my street. Unless there was a police emergency somewhere, the police always responded reasonably and ticketed them for bringing overweight vehicles down residential streets. The tow truck driver quit bringing his truck home with him, and the truck driver began parking in a commercial area a few blocks away. I've also heard of this tactic being used against rude neighbors with oversized motor homes parked on the street, moving trucks that are parked on the street for days at a time, and even oversized UPS trucks on particularly narrow roads.

Find out what your local weight limits are, and make your local police ENFORCE THEM. If your town has no weight limits, find a city councilman and request to have their implementation put on the next agenda. Then attend the next meeting with 100 of your closest liberal friends and force the issue.

Already use F-650 vehicles to tow trailers, well over 8 tons. No one in their right mind will buy a vehicle with a true commercial diesel for a daily driver, the maintenance is significant and expensive. I drive a f250 for my (side)job and to move farm stuff and it is a positive bitch in the city.

I'm more concerned when I see soccer mommy in a Ryder (I've never driven a fucking pickup never mind a rig before in my life) truck on the cell. Much more common than this ever will be. At least they paint them yellow.

What do you drive, you live in a house you heat with wood? Drink well water? Drive a vehicle on bio fuel?

93. Law of averages
just like you are more likely to get smoked by a soccer mom in a Ryder truck than this thing, you are less likely to:

Heat your house and water with wood you cut and split. It grows back faster than I can cut it.
Drive a biodiesel vehicle and run it in farm equipment.
Ride a bike to work or drive a motorcycle that gets 60 mpg or more, weather permitting.
Drink well water and collect rain water to use in toilets and for irrigation (this was a particular pain in the ass, but works.
I even have a neato little windmill that will trickle charge my battery in the winter.
Solar isn't that effective in my latitude or I could light my whole house with 12volt dc or invert to 120 where necessary.

Like I said 90+ percent of people don't do this because it is a pain in the ass and costs more, just making a bet.

Want to flip your cards?

Nice dodge..But point taken.

You dont want to take my word fine. I could post pictures but I could just photoshop those too, right.

But that still leaves the original argument, this is a free country and people can buy a big obnoxious vehicle if they want to. How this is more dangerous than a Ryder truck is my question?

Banning a vehicle is stupid. Not buying it is a good way to deal with it. It is a moronic thing to own, so is a Hummer IMHO. Ill suited for any real use, towing, etc.

I choose not to own a vehicle like that, but why should I support banning it for someone else.

If you really don't like them you can go burn a lot full of them.

80. The Return of the International Scout!
The predecessor company of Navistar..International Harvester...made one of the orginal SUVs...the deliciously minimalist & utilitarian Scout.

Unfortunatly they stopped production due to economic problems in the early 80s, so they missed out on the SUV craze. I saw a concept car version of the Scout at a history museum in Fort Wayne (where they used to make' em)....way ahead of its time.

But now it looks like Navistar is getting back into the market...

92. The CXT is absolutely perrrrrrrfect for Bush`s America.
Big, ballsy, don`t-get-in-my-way-or-I`ll-run-you-over kinda truck. Plenty of room for hoods, machine guns, pin-up posters, graffiti paint, bar bells, studded wristlets.

It`ll show `em who`s boss on the highway and leave all those lesser rigs in the dust. Mine is bigger than yours, you`re a wussie. YEEEEEE-HAAAAAA.

Nuke Iraq, screw France, who needs the United Nations truck.

100. This will appeal to A LOT of people...
there are a lot of "wannabe truckers" out there- who dream about drivin' a big rig on the open road, but never got the opportunity.
I'm not one, and i'm not saying that it's a major chunk of the populace, but there's obviously a market for it, or they wouldn't have built it.
Actual truckers may find it very appealing as well.
It's no worse than the dunderheads who spend umpteen thousands on high-powered sports cars, or expensive luxury sedans. To each their own, is the way i look at it- if they've got the money to buy it and keep it up and running, more power to them.
as someone else here pointed out- it'll definitely mean jobs for some people.

102. Please don't tell me that the 'candy apple' colour of the truck pictured
is of no significance. Of course, it is!

My wise father used to say, "People who drive red cars and trucks are aggressive folks...they drive recklessly and fast."

Time and again, I've witnessed this to be true. And, this new super truck will be no exception!

Flame away, but, it's true!

111. At first impression it seems like a dumb assed vehicle
Then again can it be any worse than some of the RVs on the road? These are usually driven by some blue hair that can barely drive and end up backing up traffic for miles.

Like what? I'm all out of Viagra but this is the next best thing for my penile inadequacy disorder? Give that bubba some blue pills, an assault weapon and a truck the size of a cement mixer!

Jeezil, what is it with American society when so many men feel so friggin' insecure about their masculinity they have to run around like the Terminator on a mission? No wonder "Old Europe" thinks we're totally nuts!

116. It's the logical conclusion to the car crazed mentality.
Shuttle the kids every day in their private Peterbuilt. I already hate the idiots who create the daily crisis over at the local school. The dorks can't even walk a half mile. In fact, I have neighbors who literally drive their car to the neighbors house. Talk about lazy assholes.

It's all how you use it. Here's my beast (And it's even four wheel drive. 24,000 pounds, dry). I can lift stinkin cars out of my way. I am pardoned, because I LOVE CATS! :)

121. OK, I seriously think it's time for the 'weenie patrol.'
We need to get little plastic weenies -
(small HOT DOGS, git yer minds out of the gutter! ;) )

And these plastic weenies should have the following written on them:

"Over compensating for my small weenie" or some such saying -- I'm sure DU'ers can come up with something far better. lol.

Then we need to put them on the antenna of every single gas hog in the country. I mean, we'd just be doing our part for conservation, right?

I've seen similar "consumer" versions like this at a few RV parks. There is a market for these types of vehicles and it's not all just for show or small-penis-compensation.

I'm afraid compression has killed my little tag-line. It says,

People who know size matters know the Hummer H5. 28.3 tons of carrying capacity. More cubic feet of space than your college dorm room. Visibility good enough to see traffic on the overpass ahead of you. They call it compensation. You call it augmentation.

131. We are insane. The nation has been driven clinically insane
There is no end to what we are capable of.

Any people that purposefully disconnected to reality
Any people so easy to lie to and deceive
Any people who, even when they know they are being lied to about important matrters and don't give a shit
Any people like the Imperial Subjects of Amerika

When Uncle Karl and the Busheviks decide to take things "to the next level" of Totalitarian Tyranny, they will find many willing helpers.

Many more will look on disinteretsedly for entertainment value.

Many more will imply be afraid and remain silent.

What does this monster truck have to do with that?

Just another symptom of National Schizophrenia.

Why would anyone need a truck like that???? Not only does it only six to ten miles per gallon of gas, it weighs seven tons!!!! Imagine if that crashed into someone who was driving a Prius! The Prius would be totaled!!!

"For personal use, it's for people who want to make a statement." What statement is that? Is it "I'm an insecure bald male and my penis is only an inch long"?

Geez!
