Schwarzenegger Lays Out Opinions on Abortion, Drugs, Gays, Other Topics
By Erica Werner Associated Press Writer
Published: Aug 27, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Arnold Schwarzenegger spelled out his views on issues ranging from abortion to taxes on talk shows Wednesday, bowing to weeks of criticism that the action star's campaign has been all style and no substance.

Schwarzenegger's comments on several social issues were his most detailed to date in his bid to replace Gov. Gray Davis in the Oct. 7 recall election. But he did not give a position on affirmative action or Proposition 54, an initiative on the recall ballot that would ban collection of most racial data by state institutions. He also left open the possibility of raising taxes in an emergency.

The Republican said he is in favor of legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes, abortion rights, an assault-weapons ban and background checks on gun purchases. He said he is opposed to offshore drilling, gay marriage and granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

The governor, meanwhile, signed a sweeping financial privacy bill Wednesday that gives California consumers the right to block banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions from sharing their personal information. (snip/...)

1. Well, Arnie just lost the puke base
Favors the assault weapons ban and supports a woman's right to choose. Which begs the question, why run as a puke?

I must say that I do like his stand on medical marijuana. Not surprising, though, given his Pumping Iron days...

3. Arnie looks like a Libertarian
I lean a bit that way so cool! He's still pro government as shown by his after school program prop which is why he's not completely Libertarian. He's definitely Repub but not a total whack Repub.

18. Why do you oppose legalizing marijuana for medical use?
Just curious.

If it has documented curative powers, why not allow it? We allow morphine, phenobarbital, demerol, and a host of other narcotics that are much, much stronger and more addictive that marijuana? Is it the fact that it's smoked that bothers you? If that's the case, then you have a problem with the delivery system, not the drug itself.

21. I think
..people oppose marijuana in general, for anything, because:

1) Stupid people think if it's legal for anything it will spread like wildfire
2) Stupid people also aren't fully educated on its effects, both positive and (Questionablely) negative.
3) The Tobacco company FEARS this plant because it gives people a buzz with far less life threatening side effects than their own products, which = huge profit loss for them.
4) By 'cracking down' on people who smoke it, the government can say they're doing good in the 'war on drugs'.
5) People are stupid.

his feelings on this won't sway me, in fact, nothing will sway me to vote for him!

12. I heard that, too!
Used in a newsclip on CNN. Think it was Lew Dobbs, and he appeared to be giggling with his guest after the clip.

Hard to tell what he meant!

11. So, with a wink to Molly Ivins for her latest piece
...on Arnold "The Walnut Stuffed Condom," I'd guess you're probably just as qualified as Arnie to run the State of California. Seriously.

Sharing his views is one thing. Does the fool have the slightest qualification to lead the country's most populous state???? NO!

I can probably think of ten people off the top of my head who also share those views, and they're not qualified either!!!

7. What about non-medicinal use of steroids?
Isn't that the most relevant drug in your case, Arnold?

8. Today, courting the Libertarians. Tomorrow, the conservatives...
Raising taxes? So, why would a repuke vote for him?
No driver licence to immigrants - "after me, the deluge" - that's the GOP way. I can't wait for his fans, the ones who do not allow us to criticize Arnoe's nazi ways, orgiastic ways or pontificating ways to find the good here. But so far they seem rather pissed to post.

9. WHOA!!!! HOLD ON HERE!!
Before you get all excited, remember what Bush said when he was running for canditate turned out to be the exact opposite of what he says and does after the election. He spoke like a moderate, but as soon as he was sworn in he made an unapologetic hard right.

Ah-nold is BULLSHITTING you guys. He's gonna say whatever he needs to try to get elected, especially in a liberal state like CA. He WON'T actually support any of those things you agree with him on after he's elected.

PLEASE DON'T BE SO NAIVE.

So what is the problem with Arnold? He is a lot closer to the Democratic platform than a lot of Democrats.

16. Right.
So then he makes Republicanism feel 'okay' for Californins. "Well, he's a Republican, but he's just like me!" Then maybe CA won't be so harsh on * come 2004. None for me thanks.

No on recall, yes on Bustamante.

23. The Molester gets a free pass.
Of course he's a Bushevik.

And I'm equally as certain that Insanity gave him a Free Pass.

I guess it's easy to engage in "double-standards", when you have no principles to speak of.

That goes for The Molestor as well as Insanity.
