WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 U.S. NewswireThe following statement on the scheduled execution of Paul Hill was released today by the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice:
Convicted murderer Paul Hill is scheduled to be executed Sept. 3, 2003. Hill was found guilty of the 1994 murders of John Britton, a medical doctor, and James Barrett, a retired military officer, as they were entering The Ladies Center in Pensacola, Fla., where Dr. Britton performed abortions. Barrett was escorting the doctor into the clinic. Hill also severely wounded June Barrett, Jims wife and a retired nurse. The Barretts were clinic escorts as part of their church ministry. The following statement has been issued by the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, the national coalition of pro-choice religious organizations from 15 faith traditions, including the Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), United Church of Christ, United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist Association, and Reform and Conservative Judaism. ---
Although Hill was alone when he carried out the murders, he operated at the fringe of a movement that routinely employs physical and verbal intimidation to make its case. While most anti-choice extremists publicly disavow the use of direct murder, some of their leaders acknowledge that their words motivate those who will resort to greater violence. If the violence is to stop, the leadership must end the campaign of intimidation and harassment. People of faith, the majority of whom are pro-choice, must stand up to the anti- choice fanatics who claim they -- and they alone -- know God's will.
