Bush And Kerry's Body Language (BBC Analysis)

Bush and Kerry's body language

.. Kerry was more presidential in his demeanour than... Bush ....a US body language expert says. Patti Wood, an Atlanta-based consultant, told BBC News Online that Mr Kerry appeared more respectful and in control.

Mr Bush sounded arrogant and unable to control his emotions, especially in the latter part of the debate, she contends.

The president looked most at ease during the first 30 minutes of the debate, according to Ms Wood. "He was warmer, more confident, he spoke from his heart, smiled and looked into the camera," she says... But the remaining hour,Bush sounded increasingly angry and repeated many of his answers"

The constant use of statements -such as "the war was hard work" - showed that he was speaking form a script... When you hear the same words with more frustrated body language, the message sounds like a lie."

Ms Wood said the president's frustration was especially visible when Mr Kerry was speaking. "In reaction shots Bush was arrogant, smirked and shook his head and looked disgusted in a childish way. "This indicates immaturity - which is not presidential. He should have been more in control," Ms Wood said.

6. Very good analogy. Also, there is a great article in the NYT by Alessandra
Stanley today. Sorry I don't have the link. The title is "Candidates most telling when they aren't talking". Here is a brief snippet:
"Television hones in on feelings hidden beneath well-rehearsed words and reveals instinctive responces and glimmers of personality. "
I am having trouble typing tonight. I hope that someone can find tha link and post this.

9. By saying over and over that "the war was hard work", shows he
is trying to explain his failures on the difficulty of the work.

He has always tried to put the blame on someone else. Now it appears he's run out of scapegoats, now it is the job.

I think he was telling us that he can't handle it.

13. "It's proof of what my mother always said:
A poor workman blames his tools"

(From a song written by Cincinnati's Rob Fetters, the same guy who wrote the song my sig line is quoted from)

It's never him, is it? Never that he's inadequate or hasty or insufficiently thoughtful. Sadly, most of the shit he's torn up the last four years is too expensive for Bar and Poppy to buy him out of -- I think he's on his own.

11. he is not accustomed to be being questioned
he is surrounded by yesmen, never really gets hard interviews where people question his inconsistencies (like where was he in 1972), never really does press conferences, only gives speeches in front of vetted audiences who only cheer, etc. So when he is with a bunch of grownups, he doesn't do so well. The jerk!

12. he was expecting that Kerry would make nice, after all of that hard negot-
iation that bushco did to arrange the "debates." which, for some reason, this one ended up having some appearance being. i was pretty surprised! i think that lehrer kinda broke all of the rules for rebuttals by letting Bush keep rebutting, and that gave Kerry an opportunity to rebut a few extra times as well, strengthening Kerry's advantage in presenting an often-smeared, shouted-down message to many many undecided voters.

14. yeah, he was probably expecting a real cakewalk with everyone kissing his
rear and even Lehrer wasn't taking crap from him. Kerry had him on the defensive and all he could answer was his usual five second sound bites, whether they were in context or not to the questions. He sounded like a real idiot.

16. She thought he did pretty good
the first part of the debate. I think that he lost his stride from the minute that John Kerry used part of us first answer period to thank people and to express concern for Floridians. bushie began stuttering right then. I don't think he ever thought about the niceties. He is not a caring person except when he thinks it will earn him something. From that moment he lost his prepared answer trail.

'resolute and determined, too. But you also have to be smart'. He kind of softened the remark after that to mean "be wise in the way you handle foreign policy", but it seemed to me like Kerry called Bush stupid right out of the gate to piss him off, and it worked.

:D

27. Hey did anyone notice Bush's eyes looking down to the left when.....
he mentioned the children being murdered ruthlessly in
Russia??????

Well eyes rolling down to the left like that is a
psychological trait used when you are lying.

It happens in 99% of all who lie!!!!

So why would he be lying about the children in Russia???
Well..... he probrably arranged it to happen via his
Saudie buddies!!!!!

30. Rapid blinking is a sign of lying!
During the debates, DuMbya fidgeted and blinked, fidgeted and blinked, fidgeted and blinked, fidgeted and blinked, fidgeted and blinked…..

It's true that when we become aroused or our mind is racing, there's a corresponding increase in our blinking rate. Our normal rate is about 20 blinks per minute, but it can increase to four or five times that figure when we feel under pressure.

When liars are searching for an answer to an awkward question, their thought processes speed up. In this kind of situation, lying is frequently associated with blinking. But we need to remember that there are times when people have a high blinking rate, not because they're lying, but because they're under pressure. Also, there are times when liars show normal rates.

Speech hesitations, whether it's pausing, using "ums," or “uhs” are another sign of lying!

Other signs of a liar are excessive swallowing….Man…Bush sure swallowed lots of water….even imaginary water from an empty glass!!!!!

32. It's good to see the press (even if it's not OUR press) point these
things out. Though anyone who watched the debates closely couldn't help but see how childish W's behavior was. I was actually embarrassed for him ... the contrast between the two was so pronounced.
