Springsteen and REM Kicks Off 'Vote for Change' In Effort to Oust Bush
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=8&u=/ap/20041002/ap_on_en_mu/music_vote_for_change

PHILADELPHIA - Two of the biggest forces in rock music over the last 20 years were plugging in the amplifiers Friday to kick off a high-volume effort to oust President Bush (news - web sites) on Nov. 2.

Bruce Springsteen (news) and R.E.M (news - web sites). brought a dose of music and politics to the Wachovia Center, starting a 10-day series of "Vote For Change" shows in battleground states. With a long list of high-profile artists from across the generational divide, the concerts will raise money for efforts to defeat Bush and other Republicans in next month's elections.

The Philadelphia show was one of six "Vote For Change" concerts scheduled across Pennsylvania on Friday night. On the other end of the state, the Dixie Chicks (news - web sites) and James Taylor (news) were to perform in Pittsburgh, with other concerts in Erie, State College, Reading and Wilkes-Barre.

Springsteen and R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe took the stage to cheers Friday to introduce the first band, Bright Eyes, and also reminded the crowd of the importance of voting Nov. 2.

"This is a very important moment for every one of us and for our country," Stipe said.

11. 90% of shows are sold out-excellent
I don't know if there has been a lot of promotion (The Dixie Chicks said there hadn't been on Bill Maher last night) locally so a lot of this might just be over the web/word of mouth.

That is impressive.

12. The CNN morning fuck....
today was doing a report and he had the gall to describe the event as a concert given by "one-time stars" for ACT.

Bruce Springsteen a "one-time star"???

REM "one-time starts"???

Dixie Chicks "one-time stars"???

The Dave Matthews Band "one-time stars"???

Puh-LEASE!!! It was a just petty way to try to dimish the importance of the events.

SCREW YOU, CNN MORNING FUCK!!!!

19. Was it that grouchy fuck Jack Cafferty?

Or the pretty boy fuck whose name I've forgotten?

REM and Springsteen may have been around a long time but they were, and still are, huge, IMNSHO.

They also make better music than any of the newer stars I can think of offhand. Name me somebody who's come out in the past few years, made it as big, and is as good. No name has sprung to mind yet.

Who's a star today? Britney Spears? Beyonce? Ashley Simpson? That's who CNN tells me is "hot." Puh-leez! That ain't rock 'n'roll, just pop pablum. The good stuff is no longer reaching the mainstream. Damn corporate monopolies.

Give me Jucifer or give me death!

CNN :puke: :puke: :puke:

15. I was there last night!
It was GREAT!!! I'm so annoyed at the coverage in the Philly Inquirer - it made it sound like there were a lot of Bush people there but there were hardly any! We all saw the reporters searching out anybody supporting Bush - in other words - they really had to look for them.
We were on the floor and it was a sea of democrats!

By the way, I got quoted in the Baltimore Sun. :)
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/elections/bal-te.to.concert02oct02,1,753393.story?coll=bal-home-headlines

A lot of people were signing up to volunteer - and some were even registering to vote.

The concert itself was like dying and going to rock-and-roll heaven. Bruce, John Fogarty, and Michael Stipe all on stage at the same! Awe inspiring music. And Bruce and Michael both brought up the debate (grinning and smiling) and the crowd roared it's approval.

Fantastic night!

It was a great show. The sound sucked, however, at least where we sat. The trade-off was that we sat really close!!! I can't believe Bruce is 55 and John Fogerty, who was a ball of energy, is 59!! There is definitely life after 50. Would have like to have heard "Land Of Hope And Dreams", but I heard plenty that I liked. His acoustic riff on the Star Spangled Banner which opened his set was awesome. Then right into BIUSA!!! Fogerty doing "Fortunate Son" brought the house down. And Fogerty and Bruce doing "Proud Mary" was another highlight.

17. Great Show!
The place was packed. Bruce put on a great show and REM was very good also, but it's much better watching them in concert when there are a lot of REM fans present. Most of the people were there to see Bruce and REM didn't get the support they deserve.
