Mt. St. Helens obliges with eruption
Scientists turn out to be right; experts now see calm period

A wind-blown plume of steam and ash nearly 2 miles high erupted from the summit of Mount St. Helens in southwest Washington on Friday -- just as scientists had been anticipating all week.

The weeklong swarm of earthquakes inside the volcano subsided just before the noontime eruption. Although irregular quake activity resumed later in the day at an extremely low level, the volcano experts said they were reasonably sure the deadly 8,364-foot-high mountain had calmed down -- at least for now.

Teams of volcano experts -- including volcanologists, geophysicists and seismologists -- from the U.S. Geological Survey continued monitoring the restless mountain's behavior by plane throughout the day and will continue for months to come.

"This was a relatively small burp," said hydrologist John Major of the survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Wash., "but we'll just have to wait and see what the mountain will do for us."
